Porter Square Books Foundation was created in 2014 with a mission of fostering a love of reading and of books, particularly among children and families in our local communities whose access to them may be limited by economic or cultural factors. Our primary means of achieving this goal has been through facilitating interactions between children and authors, and by donating books to children and families.
We started with a grant from the author James Patterson. With that money we began working with publishers, schools and authors to arrange author visits to schools in Cambridge and Somerville. The Foundation’s commitment was that every child who attended the author event would leave with a signed book.
Since that time we have held events with a total of over one thousand students at more than twenty schools. (Here’s a list of some of the schools and other places we’ve gone to.) It is hard to describe the joy, wonder and awe that so many of these children experienced, meeting a “real” author and walking away with their very own copy of that author’s book.
The Foundation operates with almost no overhead, which means that virtually all the money we collect goes directly to purchasing books to give out – we’ve already given out thousands. We are a tax-exempt organization, so all donations to the Foundation are fully tax-deductible. A gift of $250 can buy books for an entire grade at an elementary school, $500 supports a large assembly. We are trying to increase the size of the program in 2017 so that we can bring more authors to more schools and more students. We’d love your help.
