Books
of Hope (BOH) is a literacy empowerment program that brings creative
writing workshops to at-risk urban and immigrant youth in the
communities where they live. Founded in 1999 by author and educator
Anikah Nailah in collaboration with the Mystic Learning Center and the
Somerville Arts Council, Books of Hope (BOH) has published 125 books
written by youth ages 13 to 23, containing poetry, short fiction,
essays, plays, memoir, and hip-hop lit.
Youth are trained in
four key areas: writing, publishing, performance, and entrepreneurship,
and guided by professional writers and educators to write books. Since
1999, 125 books have been written by BOH youth authors that are
available through local libraries and bookstores. Youth bring their
work to the public through readings at schools and events. Annually
they embark on the Mystic Ink Tour, a book release celebration of
readings and book signings throughout New England. BOH's mission is to
inspire the next generation of young authors.
