Porter Square Books Foundation

George O'Connor Porter Square Books FoundationPorter Square Books Foundation was created in 2014 with a mission of fostering a love of reading and of books, particularly among children and families in our local communities whose access to them may be limited by economic or cultural factors.  Our primary means of achieving this goal has been through facilitating interactions between children and authors, and by donating books to children and families.

We started with a grant from the author James Patterson. With that money we began working with publishers, schools and authors to arrange author visits to schools in Cambridge and Somerville. The Foundation’s commitment was that every child who attended the author event would leave with a signed book.

Since that time we have held events for thousands of students. (Here’s a list of some of the schools and other places we’ve gone to.)  It is hard to describe the joy, wonder and awe that so many of these children experienced, meeting a “real” author and walking away with their very own copy of that author’s book.

George O'Connor Porter Square Books FoundationThe Foundation operates with almost no overhead, which means that virtually all the money we collect goes directly to purchasing books to give out – we’ve already given out thousands. We are a tax-exempt organization, so all donations to the Foundation are fully tax-deductible.  A gift of $350 can buy books for a classroom, $1,000 supports an entire grade. We are trying to increase the size of the program so that we can bring more authors to more schools and more students. We’d love your help.
