Anne M's Staff Picks

I love to read for the escape, the relaxation, the entertainment, and the enlightenment, not necessarily in that order. I read mostly fiction but I also really like memoirs. Some favorite books include Animal Dreams by Barbara Kingsolver, Long Distance by Bill McKibbon, Lost in Place by Mark Salzman, and anything--fiction or non-fiction--by Anne Lamott. Now if I only had more time...

Peace Like a River (Paperback)

It's rare to find a novel that encompasses such a strong sense of place and character. Set in the Midwest in the 1950's and 1960's and narrated by 11-year-old Reuben Land, this book is reminiscent of To Kill a Mockingbird or A Stranger in the Kingdom. The small town life of the Land family is disrupted when Reuben's brother is charged with murder and the family embarks on a journey into the Great Plains and the Badlands of South Dakota. Enger captivates the reader as much with the lyric quality of his prose as with the story he tells.

I read and enjoyed Alice McDermott's other books, but I found myself captivated by this one. One summer, fifteen-year-old Theresa is babysitting in her neighborhood on Long Island. With poise and emotional intelligence beyond her years, Theresa navigates the idiosyncrasies of the families she interacts with, who are very complex, a bit flawed, and drawn, each in their own way, to Theresa and her young charges. Each character, whether it's the toddler Flora or the repressive father of the children next door, is revealed so as to make the reader feel truly connected to and invested in their story.

This is one of McCullough's earlier books but has always been my favorite. This is a collection of essays about different people in history, some of whom you've heard of and many you haven't, but who all left their mark in ways we may not have imagined even if we are familiar with them. This book will cover a lot of ground as you work through your gift list. A perennial favorite.

This novel picks up where Castellani's first book, A Kiss from Maddalena, left us. Maddalena and her husband Antonio left their small Italian village after World War II and settled in Wilmington, DE with other members of their extended families. Nonetheless, Maddalena feels isolated in this new country where so much is unfamiliar. Although this is a work of fiction, the reader gets the sense of the themes that ran through the lives of many immigrants to this country--loss, sadness, racism, hard work, and a strong desire for a good and happy life in their new world.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable memoir written with Alda's characteristic light touch and humor. Much of Alda's childhood was spent traveling around and watching from backstage as his parents performed in burlesque shows. Then, in stark contrast, he attended a Catholic school where, as he says, "the wings of Gabriel had replaced the wings of burlesque, and now the women in my life wore black, not silk and satin." Alda is an astute observer of people and a wonderful example of what it is to be a lifelong learner, all without any trace of preaching or heavy-handed lessons.

The range of subjects covered by Rakoff in these essays runs the gamut from a "Midnight Madness" scavenger hunt in Lower Manhattan to an "Extreme Life Extension" conference in California. What they all have in common is that they are hilarious, intelligent, and full of enough metaphors so precise and clever that I had to write them down. Rakoff writes in the vein of Anne Lamott or Barbara Kingsolver, just with a bit more bite.

Family Baggage (Paperback)

A great summer vacation read that is actually about an eccentric group of senior citizens on a tour of the English countryside led by Harriet Turner. Harriet is leading the tour on behalf of her family's travel agency based in Australia and she encounters many logistical twists and turns as she is left in sole charge of the group when her sister mysteriously does not appear as scheduled. As the title implies, this book has all the features of a family tale, the good baggage and the bad, the harmony and the discord, the sadness and the humor. A paperback that will fit easily in your suitcase!

A perennial favorite of mine and a book that I have read many times over the last twenty years or so. Anne Linbergh was an adventurer, a pioneer aviator and navigator, and the author of many books over her 94 years of life. This book offers reflections for any season of the year or any season of life and is wonderful in its simplicity and its imagery. I have the 50th anniversary edition and fully expect that this book will resonate with people for the next 50 years as well. A true gift.

This beautifully illustrated edition of the Tao is a perfect book to keep close by for a quick read and reflection. First written 2,500 years ago in China and translated in 1972 for publication in the western world, there is much in the 81 chapters of the Tao that still resonates in our modern world, truly the mark of writings that stand the test of time.

Chang-rae Lee does a masterful job telling the story of 59 year-old semi-retired Jerry Battle whose extended family is in transition and upheaval. His elderly father is miserable and planning an escape from Ivy Acres nursing home, his son has borrowed heavily against the long established family landscaping business to build himself a McMansion, and his daughter is newly pregnant and quite ill. Jerry attempts to remain emotionally and physically removed from the family issues as he pilots his small plane over the Long Island countryside. This book is full of humorous and keen observations of characters and landscape and I highly recommend it.

I have been a fan of Linda Ellerbee ever since I read her book And So It Goes twenty years ago. Take Big Bites has more range as Ellerbee describes her travels and her culinary discoveries around the world. Thankfully, her tone is the same--smart, witty, and wonderfully irreverent, whether she's chatting with Malcolm Forbes, a family member, or the many other characters she encounters on the road. A treat of a book, recipes included.

Toast (Paperback)

Published: Gotham, 10/2005
This is the most enjoyable food memoir I've read since Ruth Reichl's Tender at the Bone. Slater is now a food columnist in England and in this book he weaves the story of his childhood around hilarious descriptions of food preparation and mealtimes in his home. Slater's father was quite tempermental and his mother was ill with asthma much of the time, but Slater's reflections on his upbringing are engaging and entertaining. Fix a cup of English tea and enjoy reading Toast!

Eve Ensler is best known as a playwright whose works include The Good Body and The Vagina Monologues. Out of the response to those works came the organization V-Day which Ensler founded eight years ago. V-Day is a global movement working at the grass roots level to end violence against women and girls. In Insecure at Last Ensler describes the wide net her work now encompasses from Afghanistan to New Orleans. She listens to the stories and shines a light on so many of the issues in our post 9/11 world that don't get attention, but are so demonstrative of the truly insecure and unjust nature of the lives of so many on this planet. An edgy, revealing, honest and compassionate piece of work.

An intense and thoughtful novel dealing with the process of grief endured by Sarah Vaughn and her eight-year old son Harry after they witness the shooting death of their husband/father Macolm. Set in Cambridge, McFarland deftly tells the story through the voice of Sarah, but also through the eyes of Malcolm's best friend Deckard Jones who is a Vietnam veteran and a recovering addict. McFarland writes in such a way that the reader really inhabits the story which never feels predictable or trite. Singing Boy would be an excellent choice for a book group discussion.

It doesn't seem like much should be written to review this lovely little book of poems already so carefully culled and presented by the poet. I encourage you to discover it as I did by simply leafing through and reading for yourself. My favorite pieces are "Enriching the Earth" on page 71 and "The Want of Peace" on page 29.
