Alexander's Staff Picks

I enjoy authors who know how to balance style and substance, offering surprises in the use of language and form as much as in content. In prose novels, I favor literary science fiction and magic realism, though realistic fiction with a bit of stylistic flair holds my interest as well. In comics and graphic novels, I look for complex ambitions tempered by a spirit of playfulness. In plays I especially value experimentation in language and form, as these enhance the theater's natural air of magic. Some recent and not-so-recent pleasures include Bee Season, Girl in Landscape, House of Leaves, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth, Buddha, Watchmen, Waiting for Godot, Angels in America, and Reckless and Other Plays.

"A couple of nights ago, I had a dream that my nose was pregnant." Before he earned national acclaim with American Born Chinese, Yang was already blending madcap antics with true insight into the minds of teens in his first book, Gordon Yamamoto and the King of the Geeks. Right from the first line, Yang serves up odd delights, from rampaging animal crackers and sagacious bakers, to a bully with the memories of a geek, and an unloved geek whose anger could destroy everyone.

Forget the superficial caricatures typical of office comedy--Ferris offers something entirely different, an office filled with real people, as tragic as they are cruel, and as noble as they are flawed. Yes, this novel is funny; but it's also smart, sad, and insightful, and displays genuine empathy--rather than disdain--for the millions of people who spend their weekdays working in cubicles.

With a limited color palette and a minimum of text, Larson tells the story of Hailey, a lonely young girl with a secret friend known only as "Salamander" who appears to her at those times when she stands on the verge of great personal change. Larson's is a world of wonder and delight, right down to the tiniest atom. She weaves magic into the realms of nature and science not to make the ordinary world more magical, but to show us how magical the ordinary world already is.

You don't need to be an art history expert to enjoy the oddball characters in this book--part murder mystery, part fantasy, part primer on the avant-garde artists of 1907 Paris--but if you do know your artists, it just makes this strange adventure all the more fun. When a blue-skinned woman starts killing artists, a crew of innovative painters, including quiet and reserved Georges Braque and a wildly unrestrained Pablo Picasso, sets out to solve the crime and invent Cubism. Picasso's impish antics alone make the book worth the read--so long as you're not offended by small naked men.

This collection of stories is an excellent introduction to Garcia Marquez, especially for readers not yet ready to commit to his most famous (and much longer) works. You can even try a sample right now--open this book to page 157 and read the story "Light is Like Water." Don't worry, it's only five pages. But even in such brief space, it's full of strange beauty, subtle magic, and tragic mysteries that linger on the very edge of perception.

Forget what you may know about William Gibson--forget cyberpunk, forget science fiction, forget the dystopian futures. Pattern Recognition is a story of the here-and-now--the post-Soviet, post-9/11, over-hyped, yet infinitely marketable life of the Internet age. Part mystery (but not really), part techno-thriller (but not really), and driven by a sharp sense of the modern world, Gibson aims right for the core of what it means to live in a society of unfocussed paranoia, utterly fragmented by the very same technology that proves once and for all how inextricably interconnected we all really are.

Let's be honest--comics adaptations of other people's books don't usually work very well, and it's hard to imagine The Babysitter's Club being the exception to the rule. And yet it is, for one simple reason--Raina Telgemeier is a fantastic cartoonist, with obvious affection for the material she's adapting. Her depictions, of kids and teenagers especially, capture a true-to-life energy, appeal, and warmth that can't be beat. Whether you're a longtime fan of Martin's classic series or even if you've never had any interest in The Babysitter's Club at all, Telgemeier makes these books a treat.

Stoppard gives The Bard a good tweaking in this brilliant tragic-comic retelling of Hamlet from the point of view of Hamlet's ill-fated former school chums. The two bumble their way through Elsinore Castle, debating trivialities and profundities with little discernment between the two, oblivious to the larger events happening around them. Hilarious and philosophical, with a keen ear for language, this is a true classic of contemporary drama.
