I like to think of myself as having an enquiring mind and being an "equal opportunity reader" which leads me to be pretty eclectic in my reading choices, although I must confess to a steady penchant for modern Brit lit and classy mysteries. I read for relaxation (fiction), education (I love some historical fiction, biographies and non-fiction), escapism (travel literature) and personal vindication (I know how the world ought to work and I like the books that prove me right!). I have been in a bookgroup for about 10 years now and have loyally read my way through a lot of Italian classics, many choice books by French authors and most Booker and Nobel Prize winners. Having family in the UK and Iran and having lived in Italy, I have found myself reading countless memoirs and books on the culture of these countries, and I thoroughly enjoy discovering a new author to recommend to like-minded readers. My claim to fame: buying the first Harry Potter book as Christmas gifts for all my friends' children before it first got reviewed on NPR!!!

From the author of Chocolat and Five Quarters of the Orange comes her best yet, a riveting, psychological drama of revenge set in the confines of a minor prep school in England. The school has weathered several small scandals, survived the introduction of technology, resisted going co-ed, and gained a new headmaster since the sudden death of a pupil fifteen years earlier. But things start to go dreadfully awry for both students and masters at St. Oswald's Grammar School for Boys, and Roy Straightley, the eccentric veteran classics teacher, is drawn into a harrowing game of cat and mouse against a dangerous opponent determined to destroy the school. As events begin to spiral downward, the loyalties of the staff are divided, the strained relations between the school and the town are tested, and the privileged life beyond the school gates is tarnished forever. The conclusion is a shocker, and it is to Harris's credit that it remains totally credible. The quality of the writing and the skillful plotting makes this not just another private school novel. Definitely worth reading.

This is the perfect novel for a cold winter's day: a wonderful doorstop of a Victorian thriller drive by the most fiendish and titillating plot line I've ever come across! Waters fills this gorgeous gothic drama with atmospheric settings, Dickensian villains, evil servants, insane asylums, pornographers, and scheming heroines, and comes out a winner! It somehow encompasses the saucy bodice-ripper, while also delivering a revisionist's view of Victorian society and women's history, evoking both Wilkie Collins and the Bronte sisters. Waters is a first-rate story teller with a brilliant skill for plot lines and character development. I can't wait to get of hold of her other works now too.

Always on the lookout for mysteries in unusual settings, I found this one set in France, had immediate appeal. Fortunately, on reading it, I found that it lived up to all my hopes and expectations. The characters are complicated, the plot has unexpected twists and turns, and author Michelle Wan brings the lush, sensual atmosphere of the Dordogne to life on the page. Highly readable, entertaining, and entrancing.

Corruption, murder and mayhem in a unique and compelling setting--Laos in the 1970s. An intriguing and unwilling hero, Dr. Siri, is Lao's only coroner and a very half-hearted communist. His new job quickly drags him into two simultaneous investigations in which the level of suspicion that living in a communist state involves gradually increases until he realizes that his life is in danger. The locale is fascinating, most of the characters are well-drawn and humane, and the mixture of Eastern spirituality with modern-day political intrigue, makes this mystery from a first-time novelist, a winner.

A new Amelia Bedelia book--what a treat! This time she's t the library, making jackets for the books, (the won she makes for the book about the North Pole is extra warm!), trying to hear a pen drop, running way in fear from a thesaurus, and having the book thrown at her by the police after she "borrows" the bookmobile. This new Amelia Bedelia tale is a delight and will amuse the adult and young reader alike.

This quaint and intriguing little book, so deftly and amusing illustrated by Niki Catlow, was a huge hit with the whole family at our house last Christmas. The 8-year old finally got to read it sometime in February! It includes such fascinating and essential nuggets of information about mad monarchs, phobias, how to fight back in a shark attack, a week with the Black Death and spider bite symptoms. Also included are less bloodthirsty but eclectic and entertaining factoids. Provides great after dinner conversation topics for the whole family

This beautifully illustrated children's nature book educates and delights as it entertains. A lovely book to read to (or with) a pre-schooler, it's ripe for interactive guessing and discussion. The paper collage pictures of different animals renowned for their specific body parts are almost 3-dimensional and very clear to even the youngest child. A great nature book for very young readers.

Fred Vargas is one of France's best-selling authors and this is the first in her Chief Inspector Jean-Baptist Adamsberg mystery series. Vargas' background as a medieval archaeologist and her intimate knowledge of both the Paris of today and yesteryear, make this a fascinating and intelligent tale. Her characters, especially those who reappear as the series grows, are multi-layered, flawed, human and sympathetic. The plot of is complex without being convoluted, the translation retains the sense that one is reading a French book without that "translated" feeling, and the result is an intelligent, unique beginning to a wonderful new mystery series in a setting that brings the modern day in touch with the distant past. Thumbs up from the Porter Square mystery mavens.

My favorite John Burningham books definitely fall into the "oldie but goodie" category. Both of these gentle adventures are great to read aloud and encourage repetition and participation from the little ones being read to. Lovely to look at as well as to listen to, these enchanting stories are evocative of an idyllic childhood where it's perpetually picnic weather and all problems are solved by a tea-party. Pre-school.

Americans so far may have been sick to the back teeth looking for an up and up guide to British vernacular. Well, have a shufti at this little corker and you'll no longer have a face like fizz. These witty definitions are totally brill and before you can say Jack Robinson, you'll be laughing like a drain at all of those PBS Britcoms that have previously just given you the willies. However, even after you've genned up on current terminology, you might just cop it if you decide to try it out on a native speaker. You could come over as bang out of order, end up getting a lot of stick from the locals and looking like a complete wally! Then again, if you do chance your arm down the pub with your newfound gift of the gab, you'll be right chuffed if everyone takes you for a mere Mockney. If you do get rumbled, make sure you're well minted and splash out bit, and they'll all be as happy as sandboys and you'll really feel you belong after you've got a few bevvies down your neck. Best of British! (PS you already knew how to pronounce Mainwaring, Slough and St.John, didn't you?)

He barks at the Billy Goats Gruff, scares the Three Bears, chases off the Three Little Pigs and inadvertently thwarts the Big Bad Wolf's dastardly plans and EATS the Little Gingerbread Boy! Great fun and with bright, lively illustrations that bring the characters to life. Another wonderful addition to our favourite dog books.

What a find! This should be Daniel Pinkwater's next book to read out loud on "Weekend Edition." A great premise--little Rose has to answer the door to caterers, guests, musicians, and magicians and host an impromptu party--all while Mama's having a quick little chat on the phone! Luckily, Rose manages just fine! Lovely, rollicking, rhythmical verse and fun illustrations. Great for the pre-school set who just love parties.

Imagine suffering abuse so great that your soul shatters into many pieces and those many pieces develop lives and personalities of their own. Then imagine overcoming this tragedy and living a productive life working in the high tech industry in Seattle. In telling the story of Andy Gage and Penny Driver (two beautifully drawn characters) Matt Ruff takes a huge departure from his most recent work in creating an intriguing and intensely empathetic novel of multiple personality disorder. This has none of the titillating cheap-thrill style of Sybil, but like The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, is a touching and evocative exploration and explanation of a real psychological puzzle.

This perennial British classic is now available here in the U.S. and just in time too, as the movie is due to be released very soon. "Once upon a time there was a huge family of children; and they were terribly, terribly naughty..." and so began the highly entertaining stories of the Brown family and Nurse Matilda who is NOT Mary Poppins but nevertheless manages to have a high success rate in handling naughty children. This works wonderfully as a read-aloud book, but I'm sure there are plenty of young readers who will delight in reading this for themselves. I particularly love the pen-and-ink illustrations by award-winning artist Edward Ardizzone, who was the author's cousin and with whom she spent many long summers at their grandparents' house in the country.

Despite its rather misleading title (it sounds a bit like a Danielle Steel novel), this is one of those lovely, yummy, old-fashioned three-generation sagas that make you want to curl up with a cup of tea, an afghan, and a roaring fire on a cold, rainy day. Set in the 1950s and '60s in London and New York, it follows the fortunes of a publishing house run by the rather upper-crust Lytton family. Filled with characters both likeable and deplorable, it becomes as addictive as any soap opera and leaves you even hoping there might be a sequel. Real publishing houses and well-known writers make cameo appearances along side the fictitious cast members and settings, which all adds to the salacious quality. Loved it!

Even I learned a lot about Stonehenge from this book! It's both informative and well thought out, but it's the pop-ups that can't avoid being the main attraction. See the whole bird's eye view of Stonehenge, experience the Midwinter solstice by moving the sheep, and you can even help the little Ancient Britons to "heave-ho" by moving the flap. In an industry rather saturated with the pop-up phenomenon right now, this is a unique take on an under-exposed yet fascinating subject. Remember this book when you take the kids to England on vacation.

Adrian Mole has been documenting the bizarre nature of British society's trivial side for twenty years now in his various volumes. He is now (almost) in mid-life crisis, enjoying a loft lifestyle on the budget of a second-hand bookseller, and is the father of 16-year-old Glen and of a toddler living in Africa with Adrian's ex-girlfriend. Adrian is currently trying to get a refund on a holiday in Cyprus, which he wishes to cancel having recently heard that Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction that could land there in 45 minutes. His teenage sweetheart, Pandora, is now a government minister with her own agenda, Glen decides to enlist in the British Army, and Adrian becomes embroiled in another doomed romantic affair. All the characters from the previous books are there in what seems Real Time, which to me is one of the delights of this series. Adrian has aged pretty much at the same rate we have but has somehow still maintained his wonderful naivete and faith in the establishment. This is a truly wonderful, long-running satire. If you've never read them, look for the earlier volumes too.

Subtitled "A Scottish Journal," this is a fascinating memoir from an American who married right into an episode of BBC America's "Lord of the Manor." It begins as a love affair with both a man and his manor house as well as insight into the rarified strata of Scottish society. The author delves into the 400-year history of the estate and its previous owners, as well as faces the seemingly insurmountable problems of keeping such an establishment running successfully in the 21st century. This book is delightfully peopled with local eccentrics and the inevitable bad guest or two, and looks candidly at both the current laird and the son and heir. While rather romantic in its setting and the aspirations of the author, the nitty-gritty reality of life in such a house and with such a spouse finally reveals itself. I thoroughly enjoyed it and immediately started researching my Scottish ancestry as soon as I finished it!

This skillfully written thriller is based around a disgraced British ex-prime minister and his ghost-writer working on his exceedingly well paid memoirs while hidden away on a wintry Martha's Vineyard. The more background the ghost digs up the more dangerous the assignment becomes until he finally unearths the horrific truth about his predecessor's death and discovers the secret the ex-PM has been keeping his whole political career--a secret that has ramifications on the world political stage and one that provides some thought provoking consideration from the reader. A darn good read on a chilly night with just the right amount of intrigue, danger and polish.

As dog people know, owning a dog often takes you to the edge of farce and by the time you've done Puppy Kindergarten and mastered "sit", "down" and "stay", you've usually developed a well-honed sense of humor.
