Childlike imagination and gritty gang-filled reality follow and pass each other like speeding cars on a highway in this debut collection of short stories. With a voice that replicate both the deluded machismo of gangsters and the quiet sensitivity of despairing poets considering the desperation of urban poverty, Galaviz-Budzisewski’s stories explore friendship, family, hope, and desperation in vibrant and intoxicating prose. Chicago now has its own Junot Diaz.

A young man loses a bet and signs a confession for a sensational crime he did not commit and then falls silent through his trial, incarceration, and eventual execution. This is a haunting, beautiful, and baffling novel from one of our great living writers about justice, family, love, and voice.

The second volume in the best sci fi series around sees the heros of New Venice transported back in time to an occultist-filled, snow bound, mystical fin de siecle Paris. Psychomotive travel, metaphrodisiacs, anaglyphs, a steam-powered Guillotine, and, of course, an army of ravens. And Mallarme, of course.  Valtat’s beautiful prose is second only  to his wonderful imagination and if he keeps this up , The Mysteries of New Venice will be one of the great works in the genre.

Intrigued by the description, I borrowed this from the library. Als’ essays tear right through you. Intelligent, honest, and unflinching explorations of love, race, music, culture, and literature. I thought immediately of James Baldwin, Joan Didion, and Hunter S. Thompson. (Imagine that dinner party.) It’s the first essay collection I’ve ever been compelled to charge through cover to cover. I returned the library copy  and bought my own.

If the first things you look at when you go to someone’s house are their bookshelves. If you buy and give away the same book over and over because everyone you know needs to read it. If you unpack the extra pair of shoes to make more room in the suitcase for books. If you just feel good walking into a bookstore. The Haunted Bookshop is a cover-to-cover smile.

Beautiful, mysterious, and philosophical, with a voice for landscape as lush as any Romantic, Davis has written one of my favorite books of the year. A novel that bends physics, warps time, and stretches myths, Duplex is a wise exploration of the passage of life into death. And there are robots. And a sorcerer. And at least one apocalypse. Maybe four.   Josh

Three novels, each in the style of a classic detective novelist, combine to tell one story. Simenon, Chandler, and Thompson, watch over the life of American author Shem Rosenkrantz as death and tragedy follow him throughout his life. This is a must for fans of classic and contemporary detective novels and for anyone who enjoys old stories told in new ways.

Weird and beautiful, New School is Dash Shaw’s unique riff on the boy adventure story. Set in a world where themes parks are major aspects of culture on an island where a visionary is trying to create a time-traveling park that lets visitors experience major historic moments...That’s the thing about Dash Shaw. Even after you’ve arrived, you’re never quite sure where you’ve been. New School is another great work from an important and unique voice in graphic novels.

In a narrative voice like smooth bourbon, Matt Bell’s excellent debut novel is a modern folktale of opposing elements; lake and dirt, bear and squid, song and ghost. Told with quiet brutality, Bell finds heart and perseverance in nature red in tooth and claw as the unnamed narrator inexorably strives for the woman he loves and the family life he wants against forces vastly more powerful than he could ever hope to be.

Renata Adler’s funny, wise, insightful novel accumulates through a series of vignettes; each one acting as both a brilliant portrait in its own right and a tile in the mosaic of the novel. Politics, journalism, class, wealth, sex, singing Happy Birthday, money, parties, and lovers, Speedboat reads like the Facebook feed of the most interesting person you know.
