A highly entertaining, though sometimes excoriating, send up of a certain British literary award.  After failing to win the Mann Booker in 2006 for Mother's Milk, St Aubyn claimed to have been "relieved", he was then not even long listed for his follow up, At Last, despite protests from his many fans.  Lost for Words is a witty riposte and half the fun is trying to figure out St Aubyn's satirical targets. (thriller writer and ex MI5 head Stella Rimmington is the most obvious). It is both hilarious and somewhat bitter at the same time. I wonder what literary prize committees will do with this next year.... hmmm, tricky.

A thoroughly humane and accessible tale of WWII survival that follows one family's trek across Germany after the fire bombing of Dresden, accompanied by a young zoo elephant. Recounted by an old lady in a nursing home to a young boy, and loosely based on real events, it is a poignant tale of the effects of war on both sides.  It includes just the right amount of danger to keep it exciting, but is thought provoking enough to raise awareness of the sacrifices made and bravery exhibited in WWII.

Don't be put off by the heft of this book - it moves incredibly quickly and you can't put it down. The book begins in 1960s Mississippi, with a couple of civil rights murders that remain unsolved, and follows several of the people involved, and their descendants, as the stories of the families and the city unfold over 50 years.

Mantle of Command is a masterful re-examination of the under appreciated but pivotal role played by FDR in all the Allied strategic decisions in World War II. With fascinating detail Hamilton compelling narrates how FDR, often at odds with Churchill and his own generals, skillfully maneuvers the Allies to yield to his vision of the best way to achieve victory, a victory that was by no means assured in the early days of the war. Such a fascinating book: this contemporary Book of Hours feeds the mind and heart. Topics range from Casanova's famous late-night card match, to the love of roses in ancient Persia, to the confusing evolution of star naming. Minka Sicklinger's illustrations are a perfect companion. I loved basking in it by reading only an entry a day...
