When Shori wakes she is lost and suffering from major brain trauma. As she recovers, the memories that surface tell an incredible story: though Shori appears to be a child, she is actually a 53-year-old member of a vampiric race called Ina. Now Shori must wade headfirst into murky Ina politics and decide who to trust, for one thing is certain: one of her Ina brethren is responsible for the slaughter that left her helpless and stripped of memory. Hugo and Nebula award-winning author Octavia Butler's last novel is engrossing, lush and terribly unsettling.

I enjoyed this book so much that I tried to take my time finishing it in an attempt to make the pleasure last a little longer. I met with very limited success.  Douglas and Connie Peterson embark on a month long excursion in Europe with their almost adult son Albie.  Their marriage is shaky and Albie is chafing at the idea of another family trip especially one that seemingly has so much at stake.  If you liked Nicholls' previous book One Day or are a Jojo Moyes fan you are going to want to read this one.

Unlike anything you've ever read, Thrown is a philosophical exploration of what it means to be alive through the lens of Mixed Martial Arts. The work of an intense intellect, Thrown uses the lives of two fighters to struggle with the biggest questions of experience, very directly  fighting for meaning and significance in our chaotic and confusing world. A major work by a major mind.

One of the most exciting new voices in comics, Emily Carroll’s unsettling fairy tales are atmospheric and lyrical, conveying a loneliness and vulnerability that connects the reader immediately with her unfortunate heroines. Carroll is a master of sowing subtle menace into the tone and settings of her stories, allowing her to achieve the most rare thing of all in horror comics—stories that are actually scary, and long before any monster appears on the page.

When seventeen-year-old Felicita's dearest friend kills herself to escape an arranged marriage, Felicita vows that her fate will be different. After faking her own death, she runs from her sheltered life as one of the city's magical elite into the slums, where she brushes elbows with serf and vampire alike. But all is not right in Pelimburg, and soon Felicita must decide whether her loyalties lie with the family she abandoned...or with those who would destroy Pelimburg's caste system, and the whole city along with it. A weird, beautiful book for fans of Doctor Who's "The Vampires of Venice."
