I enjoyed this book so much that I tried to take my time finishing it in an attempt to make the pleasure last a little longer. I met with very limited success. Douglas and Connie Peterson embark on a month long excursion in Europe with their almost adult son Albie. Their marriage is shaky and Albie is chafing at the idea of another family trip especially one that seemingly has so much at stake. If you liked Nicholls' previous book ONE DAY or are a Jojo Moyes fan you are going to want to read this one.

This book is an appropriate choice for my pick of the decade as it has been a favorite of mine for much longer than that.  It's a wonderful collection of essays about historical figures, some famous and some not, related in McCullough's well loved style, which is to say informative without being preachy.  Not as daunting in size as some of his other works, this gem of a book does not need to be read in any particular order but can be, to borrow a word from the title, a dependable reading companion for any reader at any time.

You don't as much read this book as you inhabit the world that Johnston has so fluidly created in writing it.  The hot and humid Texas landscape is as much a character as the stricken members of the Campbell family who are navigating their way through an emotional landscape that, as a parent, is hard to imagine.  This book is achingly beautiful and one of the finest I've ever read.

This book is delightful and thought provoking.  What toys would have been in my picture when I was a kid?  Are the adults that these kids will become somehow pictured here as well?  What do our toys say about us?  Make sure to take note of the author photo which shows him with his "toys".

This book had me at the introduction and never let me down.  A delightful memoir of Menaker's years fact checking at The New Yorker and as an editor at Random House, this book could let you check off a lot of names on your gift giving list.  Honest, self-effacing and humorous-a great read!

This nice paperback would make a great gift for anyone who loves Boston whether they were born and raised here or came later in life.  There is a wide range of viewpoints in these stories and although the book was created in response to the horrific events at the Boston Marathon in April, the pieces do not dwell on that and are truly a celebration of the many things that make Boston such a great city.  My favorite is the poem entitled Patriot's Day by Richard Wilbur.

Fourteen-year-old Jim Finnegan is the most engaging narrator I've come across in a long time.  Living in Dublin with his parents and five older sisters Jim is spot on with his descriptions of his life in the early eighties. Complete with references to the songs he was listening to, the gossip that flew when his mother and her cronies were around the kitchen table and the social awkwardness that hung over Jim and his friends as they became more independent The Fields is laugh out loud funny, unpredictable and thought provoking.

Set in a small English village, Me Before You tells the story of Louisa Clark, a young woman who takes a job as a caretaker for wheelchair bound Will Traynor.  Will is mourning the loss of the fast paced cosmopolitan life he led before his injury and Louisa is trying to figure out if her future holds more than settling down in the small town where she has always lived.  Although their personalities and situations seem completely at odds, in a very fundamental way each is exactly what the other needs.Anne
