When Lena sets out to learn the truth about her long lost father, she wonders if she, too, is violent, wild, peculiar.  Drawing heavily from the gothic tradition and set in an alternative version of the late 1800's, McQuerry's exceptional novel is both bildungsroman and roaring steampunk adventure--flying machines and goggles included.  It's also a thought-provoking examination of difference, criminality, science, and faith which features a strong protagonist trying to navigate a culture of genetic prejudice and enforced femininity.  Don't judge by the cover--you don't want to miss this gorgeous ride.

A truly wonderful book about an ordinary boy called Auggie with an extraordinary face.  Both heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure, we marvel at Auggie's bravery and applaud his family and friends as he struggles through the mine field that is middle school. Wonder is one of the best books of 2012 and has cross-over appeal for "older" readers too.

“Whether you’re black as a crow or white as snow, if you don’t know and ain’t got no dough, you’re not gonna go.” - Lewis Michaux
Part historical fiction, part biography, No Crystal Stair is a reading experience like no other. I found myself inspired, moved, comforted, and even enraged by - and for - this man's story--he was such an influential figure. Michaux's Bookstore, as it was affectionately known, was the heart of the civil rights movement in Harlem for a good part of the 20th Century. It was here where Malcolm X gave many of his speeches. Award-winning author, and relative of Mr. Michaux, Vaunda Nelson brings this inspiring story to a whole new generation.

Above is smart and brutal and utterly, devastatingly beautiful. I was completely blown away by everything that this book has to offer: characters, plot, writing, world-building, etc. Describing the premise makes it sound a little crazy - and I suppose it is. But seriously, this is one of the most unique and best-written novels I've read in a long time. That I've read period. And for you non-sci-fi / fantasy readers, ignore those bee wings on the cover. Yes, the story is fantastical, but in Bobet's hands it reads as entirely possible. Maybe it is. All I know is that I honestly love these characters and I still hurt for them. Consider me a BIG fan of this debut novelist.

Yay! A multi-culti Richard Scarry! Marc Boutavant has all the brightly-colored Japanese-style illustrations your kid will love instantly, packed with cultural references to surprise and delight. However: don't be fooled by the stickers; despite having very little text, this book is so chock-full of details it may take the patience of an older kid to fully appreciate.
