Starting with Midnight Riot, Aaronovitch has created his own genre of supernatural crime novel, sort of grown up Harry Potter meets CSI: London, and it's really funny and really well done.  Whispers Underground is the third in the series and begins with the death of an American exchange student in the London Underground system. Quintessentially British in its self-deprecating humor and flamboyant one-liners, the narrative voice is fresh but cynical, and the recurring characters both magical and very human.   I for one, want more.

If you enjoy Gail Carson Levine or Shannon Hale, you are doing yourself a disservice if you do not pick up Enchanted. Alethea Kontis weaves dozens of fairy tale threads together to create a story that is at once cozily familiar and surprisingly original. Sunday Woodcutter's story is engaging, richly drawn, and utterly enchanting.

Let's face it, we're all sick of vampires. But there are vampires, and then there are vampires. The vampires in The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, for example, are twisted in the best of ways. Holly Black serves up one girl's quest for survival in the depths of a hedonistic world where the only thing worse than dying is going cold...and liking it. Rich language, morally ambigious characters, vampires who'd sooner slit your throat than have a conversation with you... What more could you want for your holiday season?

Three years later Cassel begins to suspect there's more to his friend's death than he knows. To get to the truth, he must go up against his family and the secrets they're determined to keep.

The ghost of Joseph Grimm, one half of the Brothers Grimm, is his closest companion and protector. Meanwhile the nefarious Finder of Occasions watches and waits.

Originally published individually as three books, this middle reader gem is a brilliant introduction for the young reader into Pratchett's subversive, clever and humorous fantasy.   Set in a department store and featuring a clan of nomes, it is part adventure, part satire and part parable and a whole lot of fun.   My tip of the hat to Terry Pratchett who is bravely facing the end of his writing career and will be sorely missed by fans of all ages.
