Women Holding Things

I love everything Maira Kalman does, but this is particularly perfect. Through paintings and short captions, Kalman beautifully evokes the stories and complexities of women’s lives. A gift for every woman you know.

I really can't get enough of Lulu Mayo's coloring books. They're so adorable and perfect for when you need to just release. They're also perfect for fidgety hands that need something to do for the brain to focus.

In my mind, this book is like Rebecca meets Mrs. Dalloway meets The Silent Patient: gothic psychological thriller that follows the unraveling psyche of an Upper East Side housewife. As a reader, you'll find it as difficult as the titular character does to differentiate between what's real and what's made up in her mind. Also, there's an upcoming movie adaption with Elisabeth Moss!

I was influenced by a recent tweet from Alexis Henderson and various authors to check out this book. Vita Nostra is cut from the same cloth as Lev Grossman's The Magicians series. A slow unraveling of a story, reading this book echoes the sensation of giving someone your hand and trusting them to lead you somewhere magical.

The very anticipated sequel to The Atlas Six, The Atlas Paradox is rich with (increasingly) feral characters, chaos, moral decay, and corruption. It's a perfect early holiday gift for that friend or foe who was talking your ear off about it last year.

The antihero of this book may be Virgil Wounded Horse, a Lakota vigilante who busts teeth and bone when federal law enforcement proves negligent, but the true star of this crime novel is the setting: Rosebud Indian Reservation. Can Virgil bring peace to the reservation while taking down the man who’s bullied him since childhood? Reconcile his lifestyle with the Lakota beliefs he’s been estranged from since his father’s death? Battle the larger forces that plague his home?

Over the course of six years Frank, with much kindness and patience, elicits from Stella Levi her profoundly moving story of the Juderia of Rhodes, a community of Jews who lived on the island for hundreds of years and were brutally deported by the Nazis to Auschwitz in 1943. Frank’s loving portrait of Levi is luminescent.

I wanted to love Obreht's The Tiger's Wife, but I felt like I was missing the significance of the tiger (Lol. Hello, Life of Pi). Anyway, this gem requires only that you hitch up and enjoy the ride. Themes are dark and dangerous, but Obreht's prose is seething with empathy and I can't wait to get back to it each night.

Fleabag but for people with chronic anxiety.

A true western worthy of the classics, with just enough of the supernatural to sit alongside The Dark Tower series.
