An extremely difficult topic for both personal and societal reasons, and yet impacts an increasing percentage of the population in some way. I rarely find books that I felt like addressed suicide with the combination of compassion and intellect that I need in this case. This book, however, joined my short list of titles I would recommend.

When it comes to Halloween reading, it doesn’t get much better than the Inferno. The notes and commentary by Robert Hollander illuminate the history and composition of the poem, and I love that his wife Jean (a poet) did the translation, which she renders skillfully into verse. Dante's Italian is also presented on the facing page for those who would like to explore the original text.

Something like an orchestra reduced to a piano sonata, Heuet’s adaptation of the first volume of In Search of Lost Time combines the beauty and intent of Proust’s words (often quoted verbatim) with dreamlike graphics that capture the reverie of the original. Follow it up with Vol. 2, translated into English in 2019.

This is just so much fun. It’s intended for middle-grade readers, but there’s no reason it won’t delight both young and old. Boulet provides gorgeous illustrations to accompany Weinersmith’s poetics, rich in the alliteration and kennings (e.g. “sun-starved” = “dark”) that characterize Germanic poetry. When it comes time for their professor to make them read Beowulf in college, it will be with the glint of recognition that they knew the tale all along.
