What does it mean to be a monster? In this retelling of Beowulf from Grendel’s POV, we find the creature searching for meaning in a world that never wanted him. Through conversations with dragons and his secretive observations through the roof of the great hall, Grendel tries to determine the meaning of life, if there even is one.

Before George Saunders was a genius minted by the MacArthur Fellowship folks, and the recipient of the Booker Prize for his first novel, he wrote this book of genuinely delightful, weird, tender stories. In terms of short story writers, Saunders has become American royalty. But this is him as a debut author, in what might be his wildest form.

I've read a ton of craft books. This is the first one about novel writing that fully acknowledges how messy a process it is, while also giving concrete steps to navigate the hard parts. Buried within these tips is a philosophy that the act of creation is in itself, beautiful. It hasn't left my desk since I finished it.

Someone once said to me that Kurt Vonnegut writes children's books for adults. They meant it as a compliment, and I totally agree. His stories are often fantastical and funny, with a ton of heart at the center. This is my favorite of his books, and in my top 5 of all time. It's the story of Malachi Constant, who wanders into a vast conspiracy that takes him from Earth, to Mars, back to Earth, and to a moon of Saturn.

Can love thrive in the midst of brutality? That's the question behind Jabari Asim's new book. While the story doesn't shy away from the harsh reality of chattel slavery, the narrative is focused on four characters dreams of freedom, and the love that leads them toward it. This is a historical fiction with hidden magic and unforgettable characters. I couldn't stop reading.

This techno-thriller follows K, a slacker with a mind for recognizing patterns and an unfortunate habit of losing time. He's obsessed with games of all kinds, but none more so than Rabbits. The high-stakes game has claimed lives, and almost robbed K of his sanity. If you dig unreliable narrators and puzzles, and characters "hacking into the mainframe," this is your book.

WARNING: First book in a series AND quite profane. That being said, this book was everything I was looking for when I picked it up. It's a great adventure story with a propulsive plot and great world-building. The narrator is just the sort or thieving rapscallion you want as your tour-guide through the taverns and high seas of this world of goblins, giants, war, and plagues. Beyond that, the ending left me gob-smacked and hungry for the second book. What more could you ask for?

Follow along on the adventures of ST the domesticated crow as he navigates the apocalypse with his trusty friend Dennis the dog in their “murder of two.” As an animal who had one foot in the house, and one in the wild, it is up to ST to help usher all the domesticated animals into the new world being born before his very beak. Equal parts profound and profane, this mash up of The Secret Lives of Pets and The Walking Dead had me laughing and wincing on the same page, which I dug.

This reads more like a memoir in essays than a collection of cultural criticism. By delving into certain pieces of pop culture, King reveals the way “low culture” makes an indelible mark on us. From her introduction to Hot Topic as an antidote to the popular clique, to the bond she shares with her father over Jersey Shore, these “love letters” argue that just because something isn’t “good” doesn’t mean they aren’t perfect.

If reading the book before watching the movie/TV show is your thing, you'll definitely want to check this out as the upcoming Netflix series is set to come out next year. Beyond that, Sandman is an incredible episodic story of Dream, one of the "endless" as he navigates everything from a quest to the underworld to a centuries-long friendship with a man he has made immortal. It's a sometimes funny, sometimes creepy, sometimes heartfelt, always wild story, and the art is rad. You should probably get it.
