This is a great mystery that will lull you in. Roorbach is a skilled and lyrical writer. I was immediately hooked by the main character, Lizard, a young football star who spends little time actually thinking about sports. His relationship with the famous ballerina next door, his parents' murder, and his flaky sister, intoxicate his life and his work. Highly recommended!

Much like the main character, Twig, this magical realism story is sweet and short. Twig has a big secret, and it's not just the secret ingredient in her mom's Pink Apple pie. The town of Sidwell is also plagued by a mysterious monster. A great middle grade, summer read!

WARNING: This book will make you want to quit your job! MacLaughlin describes how she tired of her desk job, and without experience responded to a craigslist job posting to be a contractor's/carpenter's assistant. This is an excellent blend of various styles of essays, and it's fun to read about the Boston area homes she has worked in. My favorite aspect is that MacLaughlin doesn't stress 'do what you love' so much as 'do what feels important'.

This isn't a charming and idyllic story of island life. But Michael Crummey's tale of a rustic island community in Newfoundland, and it's equally rustic characters, will pull you in. The island's residents are grappling with the decision to take a government settlement and leave. The aging but still capable Sweetland is the only person who stubbornly refuses to move. Decades long secrets emerge in a town so small you wouldn't think secrets could be kept at all. I always enjoy reading Crummey, who I think of as the Garcia Marquez of Canada.
