Marie Lu's The Kingdom of Back is a historical fantasy featuring Nanerl--Mozart's older and often forgotten sister. Nanerl and her brother escape into a land they've created for themselves--a land full of faeries, upside down trees, and sonatas. The vibe I got while reading was very Hansel & Gretel--not all is as seems with the gingerbread house made of sweets. Marie Lu's illustrations of this magnificent world the two Mozart children have created is gorgeous! A dark, magical, and mysterious read. Definitely read this book--especially if you’re living in a constant state of escapism like I am.

The way these characters and this family unfold around you is both exhilarating and tender. There's a feeling of both incredible momentum and a peaceful stillness that should be at odds with each other in one book, yet they dovetail together to celebrate the mingled beauty and terror of life and mortality, in particular one life: that of the unique and wonderful and tragic Vivek Oji.

A missing diamond! Mystery across two continents (and several languages)! A tour around all of the neatest attractions of Paris, with plenty of shenanigans and sleuthing along the way. This story has tons of fun, plenty of fascinating tidbits, and my new favorite girl detective. Julieta immediately feels like a classic children's lit star!

There are a lot of stories about cis children dealing with getting a younger sibling. Aidan's feelings are extra complicated because people keep asking his parents what gender the baby will be, and they didn't know his real gender until he was old enough to tell them. He wants everything to be perfect from the start for this baby! A beautifully written and illustrated book great for children of any gender.

Once again Margot Livesey (Mercury, The Flight of Gemma Hardy) soars with her latest novel, The Boy in the Field. Lyrically written with her usual elegant prose, this book, ostensibly a mystery, is far more than that; it’s literary fiction at its best with subtle twists and turns of plot and characters who strive to understand the ways of the world.
