The Archive of Alternate Endings weaves together multiple tales which are each unique and separate and exceptional. Here are some themes that run through the stories: queer stories and when they don't get told, the story of Hansel and Gretel, Haley's Comet, the bond between siblings. Read the first page of this book, if it's for you, you'll know immediately.

What starts out looking like a predictable female-English-student-has-affair-with-handsome-young-professor story quickly demonstrates that it is going to cover a lot more ground. They meet and marry in the 70s - but fast-forward 30 years, when the prodigy Spence, now in his late 50s, is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's  The novel deeply explores the relationships among husband, wife, children, and the outside (and increasingly foreign) world, and poignantly chronicles his descent into middle-aged madness without being maudlin or sentimental. It’s beautifully and sensitively written, funny, and driven by a don't-put-it-down plot.

One of the most real books I’ve read about trans teens, which is saying something since it takes place in a fascinating and unique fantasy world. Wyatt is the sharp-edged scowly protagonist I didn’t know I was waiting for. Great for fans of Cemetery Boys and Seanan McGuire!

Jojo is the most precocious and hilarious seven year old I've ever read about. This story had me laughing out loud as Jojo tries to make back-up friends in case it turns out her best school friend, Fern, doesn't want to be best friends with her.

Like Ben Shahn's art, Cynthia Levinson's writing centers around stories of people fighting injustice. Her moving book of Ben Shahn comes at a time when we all need stories of "Civil Rights Activists. Workers Demanding Fair Pay. Political Protestors. Advocates for peace." Turks' accompanying, Caldecott-worthy illustrations draw from Shahn's style, and capture the movement and dynamism of his impassioned life. The People's Painter is a masterful biography that will, as Cynthia writes, and I have found, "encourage readers to sketch anywhere, especially in the margins."

This is the type of story that had I read as a child, I would still remember vividly. A chilling ghost story yes, but more chilling is the racial violence laid bare. A truly powerful book with such depth for the age range. Engaging and unafraid to present subjects that need to be discussed. We need more books like this!
