A Ghost in the Throat is a seance, summoning a keening woman drinking the blood of her murdered husband in handful gulps, the time both devoured and enriched by daily tasks, the haggard old woman who watches over so many last moments. This is a genealogy, a book-length translator's introduction, a bonfire. Ni Ghroifa's investigation of a famous Irish poem and its neglected author digs into the flesh of motherhood, womanhood, history, language, and poetry.  A truly astonishing achievement.

To call this a Great Gatsby retelling is to undersell it. Told from the point of view of Jordan Baker, this is a gripping and magical story about difficult friendships, identity and belonging, paper tigers, literal devil's bargains, and all the glitz and glamor of the 1920s. Probably my favorite new book of the year.

Cyclopedia Exotica is a whip-smart social and cultural critique. A series of inter-woven episodes reveal the stories of a dozen characters who manage to be both well-rounded and play into stereotypes for laughs. A book about gaze, point of view, and, well, eyes, Cyclopedia Exotica is a book that will capture your attention and have you returning for another read.

This book draws you in and doesn’t let you go until the last page. Red is born the second daughter, which means on her twentieth birthday she is sent into the Wilderwood to fulfill an ancient contract (the Second Daughter has always been promised to the Wolf). What results is a cross between Red Riding Hood and Beauty and the Beast, with one of the best romances I’ve read in awhile (there’s only one bed!!). This book is brimming with loyalty & longing & political machinations. Like Red, you’ll find yourself inexplicably drawn to the Wilderwood.

This short novella puts such a hilarious and intriguing spin on the beloved concept of H.G. Wells' The Island of Dr Moreau. This story follows a boy band consisting of animal-human hybrids who are refugees from the Island of Dr Moreau and are all suspects of a gruesome murder. I was already expecting to love this book but I was not expecting to feel so deeply for these characters. This book was so easy to follow and effortlessly sucked me right into their universe, I couldn't get enough.

A phenomenal modern classic. This is just such a well written, delicately woven collection that remains for me a hallmark of what fiction can be. Lahiri weaves her stories together with such a delicate, empathetic hand. There's so much she addresses emotionally, socially, and culturally that I still feel the reverberations from when I first read it as a teen.

A mosaic of reality and fairytale with boundaries muddied like a red ribbon dragged through the mortar, Folklorn explores generational trauma, the Korean immigrant experience, grief, mental illness, and Korean mythology in a book that chills and captivates. Truly, I couldn't put it down.
