If you have ever asked me for a fantasy recommendation, chances are I’ve mentioned this book. I have read it over and over; I find it gripping and comforting all at once. It is beautifully lyrical, a dark fairytale with teeth set in the snowy landscape of old Rus where pagan beliefs are being slowly weeded out by Christianity. Vasya is a vibrant heroine who does not fit in the world the Christians want. If I can give you one last book before I go, it has to be this one that I love so much.

The true story of the glamorous women who were unknowing subjects of Truman Capote’s last unpublished masterpiece, Answered Prayers. Leamer uncovers webs of unsung feminine influence woven across oceans and empires, taking peeks inside the most powerful (and scandalous) social circles of mid-century politics, thanks to Capote’s wicked case of writer’s block and an obsession with his fabulous flock of “swans” that I absolutely now share.

This brilliant novel imagines the fascinating life of German writer Thomas Mann (The Magic Mountain, Death in Venice).  Tóibín, the author of such novels as Brooklyn and The Master, weaves Mann’s family life and his working life into a vivid story of great highs – the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929 and lows  - the suicides of his two sons and fleeing the Nazis.  Yet Mann, steady and stoic, comes alive in this complex and beautifully written book.
