Fermentation is about breaking down to build up, whether that be bacteria and yeast breaking down sugars to make delicious food, or concepts being broken apart, examined, and put together in new ways. Katz is the expert in fermentation practices. Here, he uses fermentation as a metaphor fo  life, examining how we can draw inspiration from fermentation processes in order to live a more balanced, supportive, and aware life.

Readers of contemporary realistic fiction, don’t be turned off by the fantastical premise. Lillian’s relationship with the rather inconvenient “fire children” in her care made this a joy to read -- funny, off-kilter, and heartwarming.

A deep meditation on gender and society, but built in the framework of a rich fantasy universe (I really can't wait to read more now). Its at times somber feel meshed well with my current sense of existential melancholy. But really, there's so much in such a small book. Including some necromancy!

Easily one of the best books of the year!  Paul and Julian will push and pull at your heartstrings with the expertise of grandmasters, and months after reading their twisted tale I am unable to evict them from my head. Initially skeptical of the comparison to The Secret History, this Tartt devotee is a convert to Nemerever's achingly rendered world, which effortlessly lives up to the billing.

The Incredibles meets...data analytics. Anna works as a data cruncher for supervillains, an exceptionally boring occupation until she's injured on the job by a superhero. When the police decline to investigate, she takes matters into her own hands to uncover the true cost of "heroics," and discovers that the difference between villains and heroes may be more a question of good PR than morality. Thoughtful and extremely funny.

Julie Orringer, author of the bestselling The Invisible Bridge, tells the absorbing story of a young American, Varian Fry, who with great courage sets out to save as many artists/intellectuals, Jewish or not, from the Nazis in 1940 France. Based on a true story this novel, with its eccentric cast of fascinating characters and suspense on nearly every page, is a beautifully crafted page-turner.

Grieving is a hard read, but the central idea is so beautiful, the heart-punches you take along the way are worth it. To be human is to be vulnerable but we can envelop that vulnerability in community so that no one is helpless. Though directly about the tragedies surrounding the drug war in Mexico, Grieving illuminates more general human experiences of trauma, national myth, and politics. And I might read the last chapter, "Keep Writing," once a month to help me keep going.
