This is a really beautifully illustrated counting book, and interestingly not all the counting is in numerical order, which is good for growing brains! It's also a lovely ode to the art of noticing, and really captures the feeling of being shipped to school from the sticks early every morning.

Oh man oh man. It's been a month and I keep thinking about this book. Gorgeous, devastating, revolting, lovely. The protagonist tells us early on that her project is to make the reader fall in love with her wife, and she succeeds. And now I just have to live with that!! Pairs well with Florence + The Machine, "Never Let Me Go" + the Mountain Goats, "In Corolla"

Reading this beautiful book, I certainly learned more about Australian wildlife, the Australian Aboriginal language Kunwinjku, and Bininj approaches to art. But I also feel like I learned more about the nature of counting?!? The way that Kunwinjku constructs the names for numbers is really neat, and a good intro to the concept of base-10 vs base-5, for example.

LOTE is a vicious celebration of maximalism; of beauty and the grotesque; of lying for fun, because fun is the point of it all; of following one's obsessions to their most extreme conclusion. See also: the excruciating pleasure of digging Black and queer artists out from a post-mortem canon designed to be white and cishet. Dreamy, dry, scintillating, like a flute of pink champagne.

I read this in its original iteration, Clan Apis, in probably 2006 when I was 10 and Very Scared Of Bees. I am not exaggerating when I say it changed my relationship to bees entirely - I went from fear and mistrust to awe, appreciation, and curiosity. Jay Hosler's approach to what is essentially an explanation of What Bees Are is funny, interesting, and moving, and his artwork is top-tier.

Not all of these poems are about death, but a lot of them are. Likewise, not all of these poems are about pigs, but really truly A LOT of them are, and Jenny George treats both subjects with the care and close attention of someone who loves this world and all the things living and dying in it. Describing a pig, George writes: "All sleeping things are children."
