There are a lot of stories about cis children dealing with getting a younger sibling. Aidan's feelings are extra complicated because people keep asking his parents what gender the baby will be, and they didn't know his real gender until he was old enough to tell them. He wants everything to be perfect from the start for this baby! A beautifully written and illustrated book great for children of any gender.

Utterly charming. Featuring outcast weirdo children that will win your heart and a deeply satisfying romance, with a side of rising up against injustice. This book feels as familiar in tone as putting on an old favorite sweater while still managing to bring something new and special. A great comfort read!

This is the queer feminist fairytale adaption you’ve been craving. It's the story of the world Cinderella left behind and the women fighting the power structures left in place. Like any good fairytale, it's beautiful and horrifying, but it leaves you feeling hopeful.

I'm hoping if enough people read this book over and over again we will be magically transported into a world where a woman is president, there is no plague, and the biggest scandal of the season is the president's son having an affair with a prince of England. At the very least, you can be transported to that world for as long as it takes to read this book, which is the kind of soothing mental vacation you may need this month.

This has all the fun of film noir, but instead of black and white, this one's full color. Our femme fatale is a man who performs in drag at a speakeasy and our detective is his best friend who's determined to prove him innocent. It's got grit and snark and a full picture of the non-white, non-straight, non-male corners of 1930, and both the struggles they faced and the places where they could cut loose. I don't usually get to see myself in this genre. This is a welcome exception.

I agonized over what to read after this book before giving in and just reading this book again. I wasn't ready to leave El, the stubborn sorcereress who doesn't want to murder all her classmates even though it would be so much easier. I wanted to stay with this magical school where the high death rate isn't a bug, it's a feature. I just loved everything about it so much. Is it too soon for me to read it again a third time?

Reasons I want you to buy this book:
Ingressive: if you buy my staff pick, I gain power and prestige as a bookseller.
Congressive: Separating gender out allows us to approach behavior without getting into the technicalities of "not all men". I want everyone to read this book so we can start using the vocabulary Cheng introduces (ingressive and congressive). Her mathematical approach to gender has the potential to be truly groundbreaking, and I want to see where it leads!

I fought off a whole bunch of staff members (including but not limited to Kate, Leila, and Stacey) in order to pick this book. And then I spent half the month trying to figure out how best to turn all of my feelings into words because this book was so good and so important. This is the queer latinx ghost romance story you didn't know you were missing from your life. Read it. You won't regret it.
