A delightful, literary buffet of zombies, werewolves, and other magical beasties. Most - if not all - of the consequential characters identify as at least one of the following (and potentially more): queer, trans, nonbinary. And to top it off, the ending is lovely. Though the conclusion is left open-ended enough to continue the story, it is warmly satisfying on its own and doesn't beg for a sequel.

A stunning, intimate examination of lives led by black women during the early 20th century who dared to strive for more than white society allowed them to be. Between the stark history, beauty of the prose, and determination of the subjects, this book left me speechless.

Demonized by some and lauded by others, 'feminism' has been a challenging topic since it came on the scene. But what is it really? What does it address? Who has been involved? And very importantly, what does 'intersectional' actually mean? Though this book is aimed at teens, it's a great crash-course in feminist history. It touches on a wide range of topics, but doesn't shy away from bringing up some of the legitimate criticisms of the movement.

With Anastasia Higginbotham, there's no sugar coating. Not My Idea encourages white children to ask hard questions, to call out racism when they see it, to educate themselves about the history of white supremacy, and to recognize that fixing the problem is one of their societal responsibilities. A poignant book presented with creative mixed-media.

Tiana Clark is in the room with me, reciting her poetry. At least, that's how it feels when I read it. Her work is so emotionally rich and resonant. "I can't talk about the trees without the blood" is a powerful commentary about being a mixed-race woman in the US today.
