Flyaway

A tangled story of dark folklore, wobbly truths, and girl power. The release date for this title was pushed way back, and I have been so excited to recommend it for months. The time is finally here!

Author Strong doesn't shy away from racial violence in this MG story, and she slams it out of the park. It's a chilling ghost story wrapped in an endearing tale of family and friendship. For kids who may not like reading non-fiction, this could be a good bridge towards discussions of White violence against Black bodies. Also all of the characters are just so adorable!

A delightfully sassy historical look at Black hair culture, its racialization and colonization, and a call to free the locks.

A delightfully colorful, cartoony book about birds. Loaded with fun bird and bird-adjacent factoids. A good book for any bird lover, especially if they’re looking for something funny and not completely irreverent.

A fun jaunt about a young witch who is continuously underestimated and saves the day (quite literally). Great for a smile and giving your mind a rest for a bit from…everything. Contains combustible, cat-like monsters who live under beds.

An absolute delight! So charming, bright, and uplifting. Even when there’s some drama, there’s always hope. Love for family, friends, and celebration just make for a wonderful read. The illustrator Sara Alfageeh (@thefoofinator) is also local!

Dark fantasy steeped in Mayan mythology and set in the 1920’s. So much character and so much fun! Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s prose is beautiful, and you can’t help but be sucked into the worlds she creates.

A colorful, silly story about a girl who makes the best of everything. A good story for looking on the bright side of things.

Darkly creepy and a little unsettling. A strong, morally ambiguous female lead with healing powers.
