Join Porter Square Books to welcome our 2019 Writers in Residence Kathryn Amato and Catherine Flora Con as they read selections from their works in progress.
Kathryn Amato's work in progress is a young adult queer romance that celebrates the fact that all people, regardless of gender or sexuality, are deserving of love, and it's exactly the type of book we want to see more of in the world. In her essay about the residency, she also had a clear and specific appreciation of Porter Square Books, our community, and how she will fit into that community in her role as the Writer in Residence for young readers.
Catherine Flora Con's work in progress Notes tells the story of Claire Wu, a music student at a performing arts boarding school in the South, who is fascinated by the glamorous and enigmatic new piano teacher, Dr. Li. Things get a little strange when mysterious handwritten notes about Dr. Li begin appearing all over campus, and Claire is determined to find out who is behind them. In original and polished prose and an authentic voice, Catherine Flora Con brings the high school cafeteria and the insular, collegial nature of boarding school existence to life. We were intrigued by the mystery created by words on paper filling a landscape. We could see the room for personal growth in the narrator and some of the other characters and want to see how that growth happens (or doesn’t) in a completed book.
