Tunefoolery Music from Boston is a non-profit organization made up of 60 musicians in mental health recovery who perform music, mostly for underserved populations. The musicians, who play all kinds of music (classical, folk, jazz, originals, etc.), perform about 150 gigs every year, both as solo acts or in ensembles. People in mental health recovery deal with a long list of obstacles: symptoms, stigma, isolation, and sometimes a sense of powerlessness and dependency. Tunefoolery’s focus on music making, education, paid work, and a supportive community have proved to be key elements in the musicians’ journey toward healing and empowerment. The outcome of Tunefoolery’s work is new identities that reach beyond diagnosis and symptoms and that focus on skills, while sharing the gift of music with broad audiences.
