Logo for Poets & PintsTHE JULY MEETING OF POETS & PINTS STARTS AT 8PM. THE READING WILL HAPPEN FIRST FOLLOWED BY THE SOCIAL HOUR.

Join Porter Square Books at Aeronaut brewery for a celebration of local poetry.

The greater Somerville and Cambridge area is lucky to have such a vibrant poetry community. So, once a month we will gather at the community space at Aeronaut on the Duck Village stage, to celebrate that community with readings by three local poets.

The formal reading will be from 8-9 and will feature three local poets reading from their latest works. The social hour will follow from 9-10.

The poets reading on July 11 are:

In exploring family history, civil war, trauma, and Lebanon itself,  Jess Rizkallah draws from the spirits of canonical Arab and Middle Eastern poets, and the reader feels these spirits exorcising the grief of those who are still alive. Throughout, there is the body, a reclamation and pushback against cultures that simultaneously sexualize and shame women. And there is a softness as inherent as rage, a resisting of stereotypes that too often speak louder than the complexities of a colonized, yet resilient, cultural identity. Rizkallah's the magic my body becomes is an exciting new book from an exciting young poet, a love letter to a people as well as a fist in the air. It is the first book in the Etel Adnan Poetry Series, publishing first or second books of poetry in English by writers of Arab heritage. Jess Rizkallah is a Lebanese American who splits her time between Boston and New York. She is an MFA candidate at New York University.

Brandon Melendez is a Mexican-American poet from California. He is the author of 'home/land' (Write Bloody 2019). He is a National Poetry Slam finalist and two-time Berkeley Grand Slam Champion. He is a recipient of the the 2018 Djanikian Scholarship from the Adroit Journal, and the 2018 Academy of American Poets Award. His poems are in or forthcoming in Black Warrior Review, Muzzle Magazine, Ninth Letter, The Journal, Sixth Finch, and elsewhere. He currently lives in Boston & is an MFA candidate at Emerson College.
