Indies First is back for 2016! Once again we will be celebrating all the wonderful things independent bookstores do in their communities on Saturday, November 26. Local authors will try their hand as booksellers for the day, recommending books, helping customers find what they want, and maybe even gift wrapping presents. The authors who are joining us have shared some of the books they're going to be recommending and we're going to share those with you. First up, is picture book author Josh Funk.
Josh Funk writes silly stories and somehow tricks people into publishing them as picture books - such as the Award-Winning Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast, Pirasaurs!, Dear Dragon, LP&SFT: The Case of the Stinky Stench, It's Not Jack and the Beanstalk, and more. Josh is a board member of The Writers' Loft in Sherborn, MA and the co-coordinator of the 2016 and 2017 New England Regional SCBWI Conferences.
Here are Josh's recommendations.
Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty and Dave Roberts is one my favorite picture books of all time. It's advanced rhyming of an original topic (architecture!) with awesome illustrations. Going along with Rosie Revere, Engineer and Ada Twist, Scientist, this trio of picture books is fantastic!
The Curious Garden by Peter Brown is another favorite. Gorgeous illustrations accompany a story about Liam who helps cultivate a garden throughout a dreary city, encouraging everyone to take part.
And lastly, The Gardener by husband and wife team Sarah Stewart and David Small. Written in epistolary format, this Caldecott Honor award-winning book is historical fiction about a young girl sent to the city during the Great Depression. A hopeful story that I can't get through without tearing up a bit.
