Binx Bolling is as typical a fellow as can be: 1950s middle-class stock broker who never strays far from home, and is content with his banal lifestyle. However, he is as existentially self-aware as a Dostoevsky's Ivan or Raskolnikov, and struggles to remain connected to reality, despite the listlessness of life and the movie theater threatening to tear him away from himself.
