A Nudge to Take a Risk on The Familiar

Sometimes reading is about comfort, about escape, about planning to have a specific emotional or intellectual experience and then having that planned experience. But reading can also be about the unexpected, about surprises, about taking risks. Reading is one of the great ways to bite off more than you can chew because, worse comes to worse, you can just put the book down and read something else.

But sometimes, we all can use a little push to try something new, especially if that something new is Mark Z. Danielewski’s massively ambitious multi-volume novel The Familiar. It is currently slated to be twenty-seven (27!) volumes long. Danielewski is one of my favorite writers and I really enjoyed Volume 1: One Rainy Day in May, even if it acted like a book-length introduction, but I can see why someone might hesitate to take a chance on the series.

With Volume 2: Into the Forest coming out October 27, here is a little push. Everyone who pre-orders a copy of Volume 2 with us will be automatically entered to win a free copy of Volume 1. We’ll draw the winner on October 1 so you have a chance to read it before Volume 2 comes out. Everyone who doesn’t win will be emailed a coupon for 20% off a purchase of Volume 1 online. I love Danielewski’s work and I would give his books away if I could, but rent, lights, food, and such. I hope this is enough of a nudge for you to take a risk on one of our most talented and ambitious writers.
