Policies and Procedures for In Store Shopping

These rules and policies were drawn from CDC guidelines, the experiences of other bookstores and retail stores, and developed to keep both customers and booksellers as safe as possible while making sure the store is fun and rewarding place to be. These policies will be posted at the front door as well as in a number of locations in the store. Those customers who choose not to follow these policies will be asked to leave. There is a chance these policies might change both as the world changes and as we learn from experience the best way to do business during these times. 

  • Ten customers are allowed in the store at once.  If we’re at capacity, the bookseller standing at the door will ask you to wait in line - please observe the marks on the pavement to space yourselves. 
  • Masks, covering your nose and mouth, are required at all times - unless you’re under 2 per CDC. Masks must cover the mouth and nose at all times. Valved masks will need an additional covering over the valve. 
  • Sanitize your hands when you enter the store at one of our no-contact hand santiizer stations. 
  • Physically distance from others as much as possible. This may mean having to explore a different part of the store while you wait for someone else to move on from the section you're looking for.
  • Enjoy your browsing, but please try to limit yourself to 20-30 minutes in the store. 
  • Only one register will be open, so if you are waiting on line, stand behind the lines indicated on the floor. Please stand behind the plexiglass.
  • All pickup of online orders will be curbside, outside the store. 
  • We will not be offering gift-wrapping for in-store purchases, but if you'd like something wrapped, you're welcome to place your order online and request gift wrapping in the comments and we'll be happy to do so.
  • We still love dogs - but for the time being we have decided that dogs in the store will make it too difficult for everyone to maintain social distancing. 
  • Our restrooms will not be open to customers (sorry!)
  • Please follow any specific instructions from the booksellers working during your visit. 
  • In a way, all the policies boil down to one big principle: Respect the health and safety of our employees and others in the store.

What We’re Doing to Keep Our Employees and Customers Safe

  • We’ve moved some things around so it’s easier for things to flow in a single direction – we’ll give you a map.
  • We’re limiting the number of customers and employees in the store at any one time.
  • We removed the furniture to creat more space.
  • Touchless hand sanitizer dispensers are available at the door and within the store.
  • Computers, registers and other surfaces that see lots of activity are cleaned regularly
  • We’ve installed plexiglass shields in front of the registers and the information desk
  • Receipts and coupons are now electronic (unless requested).
  • We’re following applicable guidelines from CDC, Massachusetts and the City of Cambridge.
