On Reading in Translation 5

Here are two more entries in our Reading in Translation Giveaway. You can see the others here.

I read works in translation to stay connected with the world. I love to read books in English and in French, as a way to broaden my vocabulary in French and my fluency.  For example, right now, I'm reading Heuet's graphic novel adaption of In Search of Lost Time (a.k.a. Remembrance of Things Past) in English, and I hope it helps me to crack the original. In the past, I read L'Etranger and various translations of it for the same reason. I also like to read translations when I cannot read the original language. This summer, I read all of the Elena Ferrante Neapolitan novels in English, and I loved seeing that world of post-war Italy through her eyes. My daughter speaks Spanish, and I don't, so I read authors like Alma Flor Ada in English to keep up with her reading interests. I read Jose Saragamo's Blindness, and Haruki Murakami's Norwegian Wood, and Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen and N.P.  I would love to discover some new favorites in translation.
