Porter Square Books: Boston Edition is happy to welcome Thyra Heder, author and illustrator of Sal Boat: A Boat by Sal! Publishers Weekly has given glowing advance praise for Heder's latest children's book: "In a film-worthy climax, Sal runs into a potentially tragic difficulty, and the diverse community of people that teased him before rallies to his rescue. ... Sal’s creation is the kind of inventive structure that beckons readers who daydream about adventure, and the resourceful realization of his vision offers deep satisfaction."
We're thrilled to work with our neighbors in the Seaport, Community Boat Building! Along with hearing about Sal Boat and getting their book signed by the author, kids and families will also have the opportunity to walk over to Community Boat Building (just a minute away at 21 Liberty Dr.) for a tour and a boat-building activity.
This in-person event will take place on Sunday, September 18 at 11am at Porter Square Books: Boston Edition. We ask that attendees wear their masks for the duration of the event. Thank you for respecting the safety of our community!
About the Book
A boy builds a unique boat of his own with some help from his community in this new picture book by the critically acclaimed author of Alfie
Sal loves the water. All day, he thinks about it: being out there, just him and the waves, alone. More than anything else, he wants a boat. And he knows just what it would look like. So he decides to build it himself.
It isn’t long before everyone in town starts sharing advice. But Sal doesn’t need their help. He knows just what he’s building. And he does it! Except . . . he forgets one crucial detail—that no project, big or small, can be launched without a little help.
From the acclaimed author-illustrator of Alfie and How Do You Dance? comes a clever and heartfelt tale about creativity, collaboration, and how you don’t always have to be alone to be free.
Thyra Heder is the author and illustrator of five critically acclaimed picture books published with Abrams Books for Young Readers: Fraidyzoo, The Bear Report, Alfie, How Do You Dance? and Sal Boat: A Boat By Sal. She was born and raised in Cambridge, MA and now lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. She is also a scenic designer and storyboard artist for film and television and a part time lecturer at SMFA/Tufts and Drexel University.
About Community Boat Building
Founded in 2007, Community Boat Building’s (CBB) mission is to bring real world experience and academic skills together to stimulate excitement for learning among low-income students in Boston Public Schools through boat building. CBB gives approximately 150 5th and 6th graders each year the opportunity to develop spatial thinking, practice traditional woodworking, and learn to work cooperatively on a boat that others will put to use in our area's waterways.
