Pick this up if public surprise proposals make you cringe. Nik is stunned and dismayed when her casual boyfriend pulls out a scoreboard proposal at a Dodgers game. Luckily, Carlos and his sister are there to rescue her from the awkward fallout. Mix in delicious cupcakes, body-positive self-defense classes, and a great supporting cast--you can't go wrong with this new contemporary romance from the author of The Wedding Date!

This historical novel about Madame Tussaud is dark and delightful. It's the story of a young girl who wends her way through the streets of Paris and the chaos of the French Revolution to become a skilled wax worker. Edward Carey's illustrations are equally eerie and fascinating. One of my favorite books of the year!

Easy to summarize, but impossible to explain Oraefi is a strange amalgamation of explorer’s tale, travelogue, historical fiction, collection of dramatic monologues, and celebration of place names. Ostensibly the story of a scholar who nearly dies while exploring a wasteland in Iceland, the story meanders through multiple layers and narrators like a stream flowing from the glacier to the forest to the sea. It’s a wild ride, unlike anything you’ve read.

This is the 18th-century women-in-science pirate girl gang you've always dreamed of, tearing down ideas of patriarchy and colonialism as they swashbuckle their way across Europe and the Atlantic. Felicity is fierce, funny, and whip-smart. I didn't think I could love a book as much as Gentleman's Guide, but this one is just as good--and it's a companion novel, so you can pick this one up even if you haven't read the first one yet!

Who knew middle grade could be so delightfully spooky? Arden does a wonderful job of anchoring increasingly fantastic (and scary) situations in fleshed-out, vivid characters; readers will surely grow invested in Ollie's journey to find freedom, family, and a way out of the grip of fearful scarecrows!

Merci has a lot of things going on as she enters sixth grade--bossy Edna Santos has a crush on her school-assigned Sunshine Buddy, her beloved grandfather Lolo is forgetting things, and to top it off, she's not allowed to try out for the school soccer team! At least her family is on her side. Meg Medina perfectly captures the worst and best of middle school in this satisfying and extremely relatable coming of age tale.

A darkly comedic middle-grade novel that will probably appeal to fans of "The Green Ribbon," both children and adults who enjoy children's fiction. I would probably not recommend for the easily queasy.

Set in a seemingly normal playground, this eerie, Japanese-inspired ghost story follows two school children who attempt to rid their space of a mask-wearing shade. The story will chill your spine, and the impeccable illustrations will thrill your eyes. Perfect for an October evening full of shadows and shivering trees.
