Karl Marlantes transports the reader to the early 1900’s in the Pacific Northwest and the early logging industry, through the story of the Koski family fresh from Finland -  and doesn’t let you go until the last of the 700 pages. He writes with such authority about logging, fishing, immigration, unions, women’s empowerment, and the environment at the time. The story is held together by the bonds of the Koski’s as they navigate through the hardships of life in a new country while maintaining their connection to their traditions and myths. This is a sprawling novel with richly drawn characters, so worth getting pulled into.

A little dark, a little spooky, and just as winding as the river that was the inspiration. A well crafted story with characters that run the gamut from serene and innocent to really creepy. A good way to start the fall season if you like a little chill.

Two friends know their traditional-minded parents won't approve of their non-Korean love interests, so they pretend to date each other to take the heat off. What could go wrong? What seems like a simple premise is the vehicle for a hilarious, moving, and surprising exploration of growing up second generation American, realizing your parents are only human, and finding yourself along the way. With its playful use of language and relatable characters, this book is frankly easy to fall in love with.

Atlanta, 1890. By day, Jo Kuan works as a lady's maid. By night, she writes a newspaper advice column under the name Miss Sweetie. But when her column challenges fixed ideas about race and gender, she isn't prepared for the backlash. Rich with historical detail and a compelling heroine. The inside of this book is as beautiful as the outside! I quickly found myself drawn head over heels into the rich world of Margaret Owen's debut; it's so lived-in that it's hard not to be! There's not much better than finding such a fresh, magical fantasy to sink your teeth into.

My favorites in this collection are The Summer People, The Lesson, and The New Boyfriend, but they're all fantastic (and fantastical), with strong female leads to boot.  Kelly Link has a wacky, clever, bizarre imagination. Perfect for curling up with during the next thunderstorm.

Kalyn's father murdered Gus's father seventeen years ago. Or did he? In Wild and Crooked, Thomas delves into the prejudices around the murder that split their small Kentucky town and their families in half, while also deftly exploring family, social class, sexuality, homophobia, poverty, and disability in a way that never feels forced. The book avoids the trap of a Romeo and Juliet romance and instead focuses on family and friendship in a gripping, heartfelt novel of forgiveness and love.
