My favorite book of the year so far, this collection of short stories is beautiful, wise, and artistic. Reading it was like watching Casablanca, the lines and moments that should be cliche are powerful. Following a circle of artists, writers and thinkers, Nescio’s work explores and celebrates the world as an ever evolving font of creative potential.

Dr. Paul Allen watches the news in shock as his son Daniel is accused of assassinating a political candidate at a rally. This is an intensely moving story of a good father and his agonizing search to discover how and why his 20 year old son could become a killer. While describing Daniel’s life to this point, Hawley includes fascinating accounts of Lee Harvey Oswald, Sirhan Sirhan, and Gaby Giffords’ assailant, Jared Lee Loughner. The story resounds with Paul’s love for his son, and the guilt and bewilderment he now feels. It is every parent’s nightmare which makes this an emotional thriller to the very last page.

Richard Mason (The Drowning People) brings to life Amsterdam 1907 in this sensual story about a young man, lowly born, but with high aspirations.  Devastatingly handsome Piet Barol goes to work as a tutor for a wealthy Dutch family and his presence touches each member of the family in a different – and at times shocking - way.  Rich in period detail, this novel is beautifully written and a must for all fiction lovers.

Margot Livesey has written a kinder gentler, Jane Eyre, but an equally compelling story, set in the mid 1950s. Her heroine, Gemma, will remind you of the spunky strong willed Jane.  You can hear Livesey’s Scottish background in her loving description of the flora and fauna of Gemma’s surroundings. I encourage to you pick up this engaging book

This slim, elegant novel embodies the sense of longing I sometimes feel when stepping into a particularly well-stocked thrift store: there's meaningful objects everywhere which serve to remind me the longing I feel for that kind of meaning in my own life.  When evaluating this book shortly after completing it, the word poetic came to mind, but not in that pretentious way. More like the poetic of Banana-Yoshimoto's-Kitchen-poetic.

Art. Protest. War. The tension between fate and responsibility. A bartender with a birthmark that looks like Hitler’s mustache who buys a Santa Costume from a homeless man. A successful lawyer with terminal cancer. Mohr’s novel whorls around a dive bar in the mission district of San Francisco, brushing elbows with and sometimes plowing right through many of the major questions and themes in contemporary American culture.

The sixth in the Lafferton/Simon Serrailler series, this is another intelligent and brooding mystery from the award-winning Hill. She hits all her marks; great characters, sensitivity and exciting story telling as usual.  Louise Penny and British crime fans will thoroughly appreciate this series.
