Stephen Graham Jones draws on Blackfeet culture (and the myriad ways in which indigenous culture exists in the modern United States) to create a masterful horror novel about guilt, grief, and revenge. These characters are haunted, both figuratively and literally, by both tradition and the ways they've broken from it. And the prose is just gorgeous (and gory--this is the most beautiful book I've ever read that also made me cringe, set it aside, and sleep with the lights on. I'm wary around motorcycles now!).

Halloween might be over, but there’s no reason the fixation on spectacular and scary needs to end. Locke and Key is a supernatural drama that blends the generational mythology of Harry Potter with the jarring otherworldly dread of Twin Peaks. Most of all it is a saga of family, expertly unpacking the consequences of past mistakes and the urgency to grow past what may haunt you. The story of the Locke siblings isn’t one you will be able to shake, nor will you want to; it’s the perfect tale for an overcast fall in New England!

After a series of bad decisions, including fighting a group of off-duty cops, lands Pepper in a mental institution, he soon finds there are worst things stalking the halls than the power-drunk doctors. In another stunning novel by Victor Lavalle, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is re-imagined as a parable on white saviorism and effective ally-ship. With a buffalo monster.
