The story of the transformation of Ulysses by James Joyce from contraband to classic is absolutely fascinating. Vice squads. Book piracy. Smuggling. Courtroom drama. Heroes of art and expression. Villains of prudishness and fear. More than just a book about a book, Birmingham’s work explores all aspects of culture and highlights just how close we were to a world in which literature was controlled by the fearful instead of driven by the brave.

Faces in the Crowd is a subtle, sophisticated examination of identity, authenticity and poetry. The narrator, a young married writer and mother of two, shares her struggles to write a novel about an obscure Mexican poet and the novel in progress, while remembering the time her life when she became obsessed with him. Luiselli braids the three narrative currents into a brilliant meditation on the nature of creation. Translation hoax. Ghosts on the subway. The demonstrative vocabulary of a clever toddler. The mix of fact and fiction on the page and in the mind. With her first novel, Luiselli has established herself as a brilliant explorer of voice, self, and art.

This debut book of poetry and art is a beautiful miasma; an atmosphere, an idea, and a lexicon that envelopes you. Dark without being morbid, its words and images creep into your consciousness and settle into a pensive, persistent, and brilliant whisper. A fantastic debut from a wonderfully talented poet and artist.

A towering novel about a towering figure, the legendary Liverpool soccer coach Bill Shankly. The rhythm and relentlessness of the prose captures as closely as I’ve ever read the feel and intensity of soccer, making this one of the greatest works sports fiction I’ve ever read. A city. A soccer team. A coach. A hero. A major achievement.

Jamison asks one question over and over in The Empathy Exams. She asks it of young doctors, ultrarunners, John Agee, Joan Didion, a man who punched her, a man in jail, a woman who believes fibers grow out of her skin. She asks them all, herself, and you: how can we be people with each other? Through her brilliant essays, equal parts head and heart, she leads us closer to answering her own impossible question.

Childlike imagination and gritty gang-filled reality follow and pass each other like speeding cars on a highway in this debut collection of short stories. With a voice that replicate both the deluded machismo of gangsters and the quiet sensitivity of despairing poets considering the desperation of urban poverty, Galaviz-Budzisewski’s stories explore friendship, family, hope, and desperation in vibrant and intoxicating prose. Chicago now has its own Junot Diaz.

The second volume in the best sci fi series around sees the heros of New Venice transported back in time to an occultist-filled, snow bound, mystical fin de siecle Paris. Psychomotive travel, metaphrodisiacs, anaglyphs, a steam-powered Guillotine, and, of course, an army of ravens. And Mallarme, of course.  Valtat’s beautiful prose is second only  to his wonderful imagination and if he keeps this up , The Mysteries of New Venice will be one of the great works in the genre.

Intrigued by the description, I borrowed this from the library. Als’ essays tear right through you. Intelligent, honest, and unflinching explorations of love, race, music, culture, and literature. I thought immediately of James Baldwin, Joan Didion, and Hunter S. Thompson. (Imagine that dinner party.) It’s the first essay collection I’ve ever been compelled to charge through cover to cover. I returned the library copy  and bought my own.
