The Daughters of Mars is a moving, meaty story of two Australian sisters who volunteer as nurses during World War 1. I was enthralled from page one with its combo of plot, character and rich historical setting. The women travel from Australia to Egypt to Europe and back again and we see the changing, volatile world through their eyes. This book is a strong and satisfying read that I think lots of readers will love.

Revolution Baby is the fictionalized memoir of a son of  Communist Jews hidden in WW2-occupied France. Julek’s childhood is peripatetic even before the war. He is sent to live with friends and to schools and camps because his mother puts her activist role first. But when war breaks out he can’t live openly anymore. He takes on the identity of a school friend and hides. Narrated in simple first person style, we see the war through the everyday life of a child. It’s a lovely and moving story you won’t forget.

I loved this book about middle class Irish life just before the economic crash of 2008. Fintan Buckley has a loving family all working through their pasts and present in different ways. His interest in auto chrome photography leads him to hallucinatory experiences blending time and emotion. The writing is lyrical, smooth and economical and the characters are so well-drawn that I feel like I could turn around and see them on the street. I need to read more of Deirdre Madden’s books!

Worth it for the pictures alone, scholar Koudounaris fleshes out a strange little corner of Catholic history- that of the skeletal remains of martyrs that were dressed and ornamented as a response by the Catholic Church to the Protestant Reformation. Read about the skeletons, what they meant to the communities that hosted them and how they ended up. Fascinating!

Jacob Cerf is an 18th century French peddler who dies and comes back to life as a fly on the wall- literally- in the lives of two modern day New Yorkers- Les, a good guy frustrated with his life, and Masha, an Orthodox Jew struggling with hers. Rebecca Miller brings her characters to live with sparkle and verve. A winner, and one of my favorites of 2013.

Ben Macintyre’s latest history of WW2 espionage might be his best. The story of the six double agents and the spymasters who helped launch the D-Day invasion is a fascinating, harrowing and often funny page-turner you won’t forget. If you loved Agent Zigzag, Double Cross is a must-read, an unbelievable true story written in Macintyre’s characteristic entertaining and addictive style, with romance, tragedy and farce all rolled up together.

Without question one of my favorite 2013 releases and destined to be a classic, The Son is an incredible, old-fashioned epic about the American West. It’s as violent and tough as it is gripping and unforgettable. Meyer gets right into his characters’ heads and fills the book with impressive historical and geographic detail; you’ll think you’re reading Cormac McCarthy crossed with Margaret Atwood. You’ll wonder at how he pulled it off.
