Alone is a middle grade novel in verse that follows the story of Maddie and her Rottweiler George as they settle into the aftermath of a surprise evacuation of their small town. Abandoned and entirely alone, Maddie and George have to figure out creative ways to survive, though they quickly find out that the hardest part about this is not fighting off packs of wild animals, but rather the bone-deep loneliness of total isolation from the rest of the world. Perfect for any kiddos and adults who enjoy a gripping story and a plotline that is superbly unexpected.

A perfect summer read for any middle-grade reader with sisters! I read this book when it first came out, and it is part of what jumpstarted my love for reading. The story follows four sisters' adventures over their summer vacation at a family estate. It has been fifteen years since I first read it along with my sisters, and we still make reference to it, specifically the M.O.P.S. (Meeting of the Penderwick Sisters) and M.O.O.P.S. (Meeting of the Older Penderwick Sisters) of which we created our own variation.

The town, Stone In Glen, has fallen on hard times when an eccentric, reclusive ogress moves in next door and quietly saves the day. Beautifully written by Newbery Medal winner, Kelly Barnhill, The Ogress… is a gentle but incisive allegory about what happens to a community when neighborliness disappears.

Fantastic, fantastical read-aloud for the whole family!

Lou is in a new home now that her mom's married Steve. Which is not a terrible thing -- even though Lou doesn't want to like Steve, he's a pretty decent guy. But he's not her dad -- who comes with his own set of problems. Add a guitar, some music lessons, and an older sister who doesn't mind breaking the rules, and join Lou as she starts to figure things out.

Floating in the pool like a starfish is the only place 11-year-old Ellie feels weightless. Everywhere else she is burdened by people’s perceptions of her. Bullied relentlessly about her weight, Ellie finds allies in her father, a therapist and her new next door neighbor and learns to stand up for herself, abandon her fat girl rules, and take up space, even outside the pool. Powerful, sometimes painful, kid-sized critique of diet culture and fat shaming.

Cilla Lee-Jenkins is a precocious, funny, irreverent kid with a huge imagination, so it only stands to reason that she's going to be a Best Selling Author Extraordinaire. But first she has to withstand the trials of second grade, navigate friendship, endure weird questions from strangers about "what" she is (um... a future author?), and worst of all: her mom is pregnant, and Cilla is NOT excited about it. This book is full of heart, humor, and hope, and it made me laugh out loud AND cry, IN FRONT OF STRANGERS. Also, the author is local and delightful!

The complexities of the 1980s shape this coming of age story, with characters Bug (Beatrice) and Frankie learning about the world and how they may, or may not fit in. It is a story about acceptance, friendship, family, and love. Lots of love. I cannot recommend it enough.

This is a delightful story about how a Korean American middle-grader, Chloe, feels about growing up in a town where no one else looks like her except for her family. It's hard to give a true and wonderful review w/out spoilage but what feels like a contemporary story at the beginning does take a turn into another genre that is quite exciting.
