Don't be put off by the heft of this book - it moves incredibly quickly and you can't put it down. The book begins in 1960s Mississippi, with a couple of civil rights murders that remain unsolved, and follows several of the people involved, and their descendants, as the stories of the families and the city unfold over 50 years.

I loved this book about middle class Irish life just before the economic crash of 2008. Fintan Buckley has a loving family all working through their pasts and present in different ways. His interest in auto chrome photography leads him to hallucinatory experiences blending time and emotion. The writing is lyrical, smooth and economical and the characters are so well-drawn that I feel like I could turn around and see them on the street. I need to read more of Deirdre Madden’s books!

Varamo is honestly one of the funnest and most charming books I've ever read. Aira tells the story of a government clerk in Panama and his dark, hilarious night of the soul. The book recounts the story of the night just before he composed the poem that made him famous. It all starts when he's paid in counterfeit money and goes on a long ramble about the shady economics of his country. From here, anarchists, embalmed fish, gamblers, smugglers and more play a part in the poem's creation and the poem itself. It’s a sparkling, irresistible comedy of errors.

A stunning story that will grip you from the opening scene. The writing flows like poetry, and each word is meant to be savored. The characters are connected through time by one man's single thoughtful act during WW2. The atmosphere is beautiful, peaceful, and rough, and leaves the reader reeling in the quiet mystery and drama of how actions do resonate through time. A book to be read twice and to be given to friends.

This
is the first in a series of clever, darkly humorous, and cynical modern
spy novels featuring the inmates of Slough House, all MI5 agents who
have failed spectacularly in some way and are relegated to the most mind
numbing tasks in the hope they will resign from the service. However,
ambition, denial and events conspire to put them back in the game again
and the result is highly addictive. Herron is a modern Le Carre from
the world of office cubicles, downsizing and wry, obscure British TV.
The second book in the series, Dead Lions, is even better.

Author of the bestselling Let the Great World Spin,
Colum McCann weaves three seemingly disparate stories into one: the
visit of Frederick Douglass to Ireland in 1845 where he sees the famine
firsthand and meets a young Irish girl who flees her homeland for
America; the flight across the Atlantic by two World War I veterans in
1919; and the trials of former Senator George Mitchell, as he tries to
broker an Irish peace in 1998. This book is a brilliant combination of
fact and fiction written by a master craftsman.

Run
through all of Alan Furst? Caught up with Philip Kerr? Long since
read the original Eric Amblers? Despair not - David Downing's British
journo/spy John Russell fills the bill nicely. Zoo Station is the first
of the "Station" series (the titles reference German train stations).

What
Owen really wants is a kitchen worthy of his culinary talents. What he
has is the galley of a pirate ship, where he's expected to produce a
gourmet meal each week for his captor, Mad Hannah Mabbot. Hannah and
Owen spar over piracy, cuisine, and escape attempts in this novel that
ranks with the classic pirate stories.
