Barbara Kingsolver tackles global warming with a heartfelt tale of one Appalachian family. Even though we know Kingsolver has a point to make she wraps it around a very compelling well told tale.  She brings together a rural fundamentalist family, all with different ideas about what is right, and a team of scientists who descend on the area to study the bizarre behavior of Monarch butterflies. What I appreciate in Kingsolver’s writing is her ability to get into the hearts and minds of her characters which transcend to all of us her readers.

With his signature Tourette's-like honesty, Savage Love columnist/podcaster Dan Savage draws upon his own long term, if hilariously flawed, relationship to explore the issues surrounding gay marriage. Between his son's view on gay marriage ("boys don't marry boys!") to his Christian mother's ("you should marry the person you want to be with") to his boyfriend's ("why not just get a 'property of dan savage' tattoo?" Dan eventually finds his way further down the path to marriage than he realizes.

A fascinating, highly readable evisceration of the fast food industry. The book covers a lot of ground-  nutrition, politics, economics, marketing, chemistry, industry, and the human cost as well- with cutting humor and vitriol. I learned so much and couldn’t put it down. A terrific read and eye-opener.

Huzzah!  A new book by the Pulitzer-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom, my choice for the go-to one-volume history of the Civil War.  Here he treats the naval aspect of the conflict with the same compelling narrative style as Battle Cry, including blockade runners, extraordinary battles for dominance of the crucial Mississippi River and the total game-changing introduction of ironclads.

The Last Walk: Reflections on Our Pets at the End of Their Lives By Jessica Pierce Cover Image

A mixture of compassion and essential information, The Last Walk is for anyone who has ever had to deal with the heart wrenching decisions that come at the end of a beloved pet's life. Jessica Pierce tells the story of the last year of her faithful dog Ody, and bravely confronts the moral, practical, and emotional issues that pet owners face as their animals decline. A customer recommended this book to me as one of the best she had ever read about pets at the end of their lives. When I finished it we both agreed that this book is beautifully written and incredibly sad but, most importantly, it is extremely consoling, and invaluable for anyone who has ever loved a pet.
