THE book for anyone who has ever loved a dog who loved a toy.  Ball! or ball? thinks the obsessive pooch and his world is complete while his young owner is there to throw it for him.  But when she leaves for school he has to amuse himself until she returns - to mixed success.  The drawings of the dog, overweight, highly expressive and drooling, are a masterpiece in the power of a few cleverly placed lines to illustrate emotion and the love in the three way relationship of dog-girl-ball is touching.

Paul is a goldfish who swims around aimlessly until Bernadette arrives.  She introduces him to the world outside the fishbowl and helps him see things in a whole new way. Kids will giggle at the surprising descriptions Bernadette gives everyday objects and have fun guessing what she will come up with next.  The humor and wonderful message make this a book that will delight both kids and adults, but it is Rosy Lamb's beautifully painted illustrations that really set it apart.

As a fan of The Jolly Postman growing up, I have a soft spot for books-within-books. This one is a super fun construction of many nesting books, each with their own design and story! If you're of the age having graduated from board books, and are ready for picture books with simple, fun, layered stories, you should dive right into Open This Little Book. There's a ton of details to find and a great ending to satisfy.

I grew up on Sesame Street's There's a Monster at the End of this Book! in which Elmo begs you (the reader) not to turn each page, because it gets you closer to the end...where the monster is! Warning: Do Not Open This Book is a worthy successor -- both in that I still had that same small thrill by "rebelling" against the narrator and brazenly turning each page, despite the hand-wringing and head-shaking I imagined to be causing. The tongue-in-cheek message about all the potential danger and chaos books wreak make this book a perfect pick for Banned Book celebrations. But the clever, interactive ending, the ridiculously cute slow loris, and mischievous-looking monkeys make this title stand out. WAY OUT.

With his usual brilliantly detailed but gentle illustrations Bob Graham shows readers the unusual hero of this children's book - 60 year old Monsieur Albert.  Told by Peter Smith in rollicking rhyme and with mind-stretching vocabulary, this book just begs to be read out loud as it details our plucky bike rider's race from Paris to Nice and manages to be highly evocative of Paris and France too.  Absolutement charmante!
