This dense and beautiful book touches a wide range of topics including gender, race, violence, and art, taking the first few moments of a riot and meditating and expanding on them until the moment touches so much more. The act of creation, of poetry, of storytelling is the centerpiece of Kapil’s brilliant book, so I highly recommend this for writers and other artists.

The inaugural poet Blanco’s memoir of his childhood in Miami is both a quintessentially American immigrant family story and his own singular story of his awakening to his identity as a young gay man. Warm, tenderhearted, and often hilarious, Blanco captures the unique essence of the Cuban exile community in which he grew up.

For enthusiasts of Han Shan (Cold Mountain) and other medieval Chinese poets (in translation), Stonehouse speaks to the same aesthetic and has great power within the simplicity. A great discovery, thanks to Red Pine.

What is the color of loss? Nelson might answer blue, Carson might answer red, but in forming their answers both writers have produced totally unique, totally brilliant works of art. Through personal meditation and the lens of classical Greek literature both authors’ explorations illuminate far more of human experience than just the moments and thoughts subject to their inspection. Two works of genius.

Thirty years after first encountering the poems of Han-shan, better known here as Cold Mountain, James Lenfestey makes a pilgrimage of sorts to the reputed hillside cave in China where Han-Shan lived as a hermit centuries ago. With Bill Porter (aka Red Pine) as his guide he visits along the way shrines of other important poets and Buddhist temples all the while documenting his journey in both prose and verse.Dale
Grab this book, find a porch rocker, and settle into August.

This debut book of poetry and art is a beautiful miasma; an atmosphere, an idea, and a lexicon that envelopes you. Dark without being morbid, its words and images creep into your consciousness and settle into a pensive, persistent, and brilliant whisper. A fantastic debut from a wonderfully talented poet and artist.
