It is always good to discover an author, but especially if he is Robertson Davies. (I know, where have I been?) This first volume of the Deptford Trilogy is a well-told tale that ends with a twist. Though it stands alone well, I am now deep into the second book and look forward to the third.

In this fictionalized telling of a shocking historical event in 1911, there are several predicable paths this novel could go. It follows none of them.  It is sophisticated in its storytelling, and beautiful in its description of coastal Maine.

Winner of the Hugo Award, the Locus Award, and the Newberry and Carnegie Medals, this is storytelling at its best. Neil Gaiman’s tale of an orphaned boy raised by the ghostly inhabitants of an ancient graveyard, perfectly complimented by the illustrations of Dave McKean, is highly imaginative, witty, and a little bit creepy.
