What a strange delight! DeWitt is an absolute genius and this story of a brilliant young woman discovering she was raised by criminals (and then leaning into that discovery) is a great introduction to DeWitt's work. Throw in a delectable anti-authoritian streak and you have a fun and intelligent single-sitting read.

Before George Saunders was a genius minted by the MacArthur Fellowship folks, and the recipient of the Booker Prize for his first novel, he wrote this book of genuinely delightful, weird, tender stories. In terms of short story writers, Saunders has become American royalty. But this is him as a debut author, in what might be his wildest form.

This thoughtful short story collection is a study of human connections and the landscapes they play out on. Unafraid truths about family, tradition, and women, separated by generations but tied by experience, rise from the soil of the now-American West that is Kali Farjado-Anstine’s ancestral home in this lauded debut. You can’t miss “Remedies,” “Ghost Sickness,” or “All Her Names,” or any of them, really. A necessary read before her first novel comes out in 2022.

This book is incredible. After each story, I had to stop and stare at a wall for at least 24 hours just processing until I could move on and read the next one. Several times I found myself forgetting that this was, in fact, a book of short stories and not a full length novel where I could spend all 256 pages in any one of Alaya Dawn Johnson's unique and engrossing worlds, and the first story, A Guide to Fruits of Hawai'i immediately captured my vampire loving heart.
