January Scaller lives a quiet, lonely life in her guardian's mansion, waiting for her father to return from his trips around the world and longing to go on adventures with him, until the day she discovers a mysterious book. The book tells the story of a star-crossed romance that spans multiple worlds, and before long, January realizes that this story is entwined with her own. Ten Thousand Doors is a beautiful love letter to portal fantasies and the power of the written word.

Plain Bad Heroines was not just up my alley, but had packed a bag and moved into my bedroom. A short list of things you’ll find in this novel; curses, lesbians, gilded-age society scandals, yellow jackets, a heaping dose of snark, multiple narratives that weave together beautifully, footnotes, historic queer icons, and the nagging sense that the line between what’s real and what isn’t has been blurred. This is the sort of New England Gothic that I can never get enough of. It’s the perfect autumn read for you and your best friend that you’re secretly in love with, trust me.

Enthralling, smart, and relatable, these stories offer commentary on society, gender, and power...and feature ghosts. Each story in this book is a retelling of a traditional Japanese ghost tale. A thin thread connects them, growing gradually stronger until the end, making this a superb choice for those novel-enthusiasts looking to try more short stories.

Reading Negotiations is like grabbing a piece of metal so cold it feels like fire in your palm. Birdsong leverages both the eye-contact of direct confessional poetry and the ambiguity and complexity of more fluid poetic forms and expressions to create a collection that is equal parts pain and power. A challenging, exciting, even startling debut.

With a deft hand, Strelow weaves together three compelling stories, spanning a century and set in the grandeur of the Pacific coast.  Her prose is gorgeous, especially the way she lovingly renders the natural environment (including the titular birds). This is a book about both finding ourselves as individuals and the ways in which we are connected to the larger world around us. I adored it.

THIS. BOOK. I started this book and said that I was just going to read two chapters and then do something responsible, and instead I made it ten chapters and 100 pages before I was able to rip my eyes away from the page. This book is perfect for people who want something thrilling but not too scary. With patriarchal threads from The Handmaid’s Tale (and our own society), a puritanical setting, and a vibe that reminded me of the VVitch, this is a ‘carve out a day and don’t plan on moving until you’re done’ kind of book.
