Go back 50 years from Hilary Mantel's Henry VIII trilogy and you are in a very different time Henry VI and the Wars of the Roses. Like much great historical fiction, this novel reads more like fiction than history, with rich, fully drawn characters, intricate plots and vivid scenery. It is the first of three (the second is due out in June, and the author will be here at PSB) as an added bonus, if you want to see the Bard's version on stage, Actor's Shakespeare Project is performing Henry VI, Part 2 from May 13 through June 7.

I can guarantee that you don't know the real story of Wonder Woman. Margaret Sanger and the early 20th century feminist movement, the Harvard psychologist who claims to have invented the lie detector test, the women's suffrage movement, and one of the most bizarre family arrangements imaginable - all are a part of the amazing history of the third most popular comic character in the US, behind only Superman and Batman. Cultural history at its finest.

This book beautifully walks the fine line between historical fiction and biography. It depicts Fitzgerald's troubled and frustrating last years in Hollywood, struggling against being a has-been and desperately trying to get work to pay for Zelda's sanitarium and their daughter Scottie's education, all while dealing with his own alcoholism and trying to live a "normal" life with his mistress Sheila Graham. Half of the literary and film worlds of the 1930s makes an appearance, and O'Nan intersperses flashbacks of Scott's and Zelda's lives for rich background and context.

Squarely in the great Irish tradition of magnificent writing about hardship, rage, longing and fear, this debut novel is set in recession-smitten Ireland about five years ago. Its 21 chapters are narrated by 21 different characters, each with a unique and piercing voice. The writing is rhythmic, raw, often comic and always brilliant. The book won a slew of awards in Ireland and the UK, and is just published in the US.

Old Filth has been a staff pick before, but Europa has now issued the magnificent Filth
trilogy in a single boxed set. The novels trace the interwoven stories of the three main characters, each taking center stage in one of the books. These are stories of the fading British empire in Asia during the mid-20th century, and the gentle decline of three protagonists into old age as they return to rural England. The writing is poignant, funny and incisive, and each book ends making you wish it had another 200 pages.

This is the best biography, and possibly the best history, I have ever read – whether or not you really know or think you care about Lyndon Johnson. It’s third in a series of four (eventually five, when Caro finishes the last volume), and I think the most dazzling and fascinating of them. As much about the Senate as about Johnson, the book explains how he radically reshaped the institution so he could take control of it – that control culminates in the passage of the first civil rights legislation since Reconstruction. It’s massive, meticulously researched, and incredibly engaging. Worth the effort.David

I'm always impressed when authors write as something very different from themselves, especially in first person narrative.  Like male actors who played Viola or Rosalind in Shakespeare's time, Hunt is a man writing as a woman who is pretending to be a man. The conceit is based on real history: hundreds of women who disguised themselves as men so they could fight in the Civil War.  The voice is lyrical, melodic and authentic. As a special bonus, we’ve arranged a dinner with the author on September 21.

A young journalist whose family and friends are all Russian Jewish immigrants living in Brooklyn gets roped into a scheme of writing (made-up) stories to submit to the committee that is awarding restitution claims to Holocaust survivors.  This debut novel is funny, intelligent and wonderfully written, exploring the mysterious bonds of family and the often obscure line between fiction and reality.

Garcia Marquez's recent death inspired me to go back and read what I had long remembered as my favorite of his novels.  It is just as delightful upon rereading - a novella that begins the morning of Santiago Nasar’s titular "Death", and then backs up and recounts the chain of events that has led up to it, inevitably.  Rich and imaginative Marquez narrative at its finest.
