In 1899 Manhattan, Chava is a golem who has unexpectedly lost her master, and Ahmad is a jinni who is accidentally summoned from the copper flask in which he was imprisoned. They form an odd and touching friendship, and together they navigate a strange new country and the return of an old sinister force. Part historical fiction, part mythological fantasy, and entirely wonderful.

One of my all-time favorites and the perfect tale for a cold winter's night! Edith Pattou retells the Norwegian folktale "East of the Sun, West of the Moon," weaving a wild tale of curses, castles, blizzards, and white bears. (The sequel came out last month--a full 15 years after the first book--and it's just as much fun.)

Tiffany Aching is a witch who lives on a farm (y'know--the butter churns itself). The Nac Mac Feegles are tiny blue men (with Scottish accents) who are extremely strong, even more silly, and love getting into trouble. Their adventures have something for every reader. After all, what's not to like about a girl who fights monsters with a frying pan?

This is my favorite book right now. In Mirage, Somaiya Daud has crafted a beautiful fantasy (which seamlessly features some sci-fi concepts). The characters feel so alive. The setting and cultures, inspired by her Moroccan heritage, are intricate, beautiful, and refreshingly unique. The story is rich and engaging, but also succinct.

The youngest, half-goblin son of the Emperor has lived his entire life in exile, distant from the Imperial Court and the deadly intrigue that suffuses it. But when his father and three older sons in line for the throne are killed in an "accident," he has no choice but to take his place as the only surviving heir. A compelling character in a fascinating fantasy world!
